JUST PURCHASED NEW (2002) 2500 DIESEL. THE STINCH OF AN OIL OR FUEL SMELL IN THE CABIN IS ALMOST OVERWHELMING. WHAT'S UP? A FRIEND TOLD ME THERE WERE POSTS CONCERNING THE SAME ON THIS SITE. PLEASE HELP.

First things first. You will have to identify whether it is a fuel smell or an oil smell so you can get some expert advice. Oil smell happens to all right after an oil change for a couple of hundred miles.

Breather Bottle

If they still have them on the 02's, that's the cause IMHO. The day I picked my truck up and drove it home I could actually see the oily mist coming through the vents  . It will lessen after several hundred miles but will come back at every oil change. If you do a search under breather bottle/crankcase breather, etc. you will find that many of us have removed the catch bottle, which is located in a great spot, just under the fan. The best fix is to remove the bottle and extend the 3/4" hose to the track bar and zip tie it off. If you are really concerned about drips on the driveway, relocate the bottle away from the fan but keep the extension as short as possible.

You might also check the rubber molding that runs along the top back of the engine compartment. I have noticed that if mine comes loose, the smell gets stronger... just push it back into place and pinch the clamps tighter to hold it in place.

breather bottle woes

bmcclung,

I would lay money down that it's that darn breather (pill) bottle that's creatin' the smell. It is located in a very bad spot, right on the timing gear cover in the fan's path. Noticed on mine after a few weeks I owned it, the whole front and underside was covered in an oily mist. Well that did'nt last long. Check the archives. I am sure you'll find something there. Good luck my friend.
