Not really sure what you're concerned about- exhaust system? engine Modifications?

If your 97 came with an EGR, then technically it would be illegal to mess with it, but then again, who's gonna know?

As far as the rest of it goes, BOMBS away. There are no inspections in CA yet and no smog, so I would do whatever you think is best for you and your application.

AFAIK fuel cam plates don't work with CA EGR engines... I went to Texas to buy my '97. :) 230/605 plates are emissions legal.

Eric

I have a TST #6 plate, plus some other stuff, so I am about 250 hp. I just remember not to get on it too much when the law is behind me--or in front of me--I'd hate to flat run right over a cruiser!:p

NO SMOG CHECK IN CA...YEPEEE!!!

Thank You ALL... I am a new diesel owner I assummed there were emmissions tests because the dealer charged me for one when I bought the truck. I am glad to here there is no emmissions testing yet in CA. Now I will have to research the pro's and con's to the many modifications available. Thanks again and any suggestions or informations on engine modifications you all might have tried, I'd welcome.

Thanks Again

Erik

Erik- I bought my '96 in '95 so I don't have the EGR setup, and with Manual transmission, 215hp. The EGR intake horn- where the exhaust gasses enter the horn, is necked down and poses an airflow restriction. I believe that TST et. al. won't offer their kits to the egr cummins due to this inlet restriction. Some members from our state have purchased a '95 air horn and neutered the egr function, then proceeded to bomb away. I don't know if there are other considerations that are involved, but you've come to the right place to ask. HVAC or BPINE (and others) might be able to help out here, since they are alot more knowledgeable than I.

Eric,go back to the stealer and get your money back for the smog check. they aren't supposed charge for it. did that with my 96 when i bought it,diden't notice at the time, was to excited to go play with new truck!!:D

"If I had an EGR Valve (96-98. 5) but replaced it with a none EGR intake air horn can I now use a TST plate. " This is some thing I get ask a lot and to my understanding is yes, you can now use a fuel plate. Bob4X4 do you agreed with this?

Whoever said u can't put a plate in an egr motor is full of BS. U can put a plate in almost any P-Pump.

Okay, we are talking California here, so here is what u need to do. Buy an out of state intake manifold. I get these for $60 new. Its new pretty aluminum and is almost twice the size of the Egr one. Next, put a copper or steel block off plate in between the egr tube and ex. manifold. If ya want to make it killer, then go buy an ATS manifold. Lets face it, your stock manifold is gonna shrink any way. Also, u can go to Cummins and buy an ex. manifold for a 94-95 Cummins, which had no EGR. I believe EGR started in mid 96. Those manifolds are $130 through Cummins. Okay, now that the EGR is out of the way, it would be a good idea to up the timing on the CA trucks. Most were set at the factory at 13 degrees. The plate u need is a 6 plate or a 5 plate if u don't have GOV. springs, if u plan on running Gov. springs then buy a 10 plate. It is a good idea to cut the cat out or hog it out.

THERE IS TESTING IN CA! Most of us are lucky, but on the grapevine they do pull over ALL diesels at time and smoke test them. They put a big can at the end of your exhaust. The way to get around this on Bombed trucks is to install a Vallet switch which cuts the boost going to the AFC and limits Gov arm travel. U'll pass with flying colors, no problem. If anybody asks you, . . your truck is out of state rig when u bought it. And u can put a plate on a CA truck, even if u keep the egr tube on.

When I bought my 96 (from Toyota dealer no less:rolleyes: ) they charged me for smog too. Took some serious argument:-{} to finally get the fees back almost 2 months later  !! That's what you get for buying a diesel from a gas dealer!

You have to watch the dealers. In 86 when I bought my Comanche they tried to charge me the sales tax for L. A. County 1/2 cent more than Orange County where I lived at the time. I 97 when I bought the Cherokee "if you pay for the smog now you won't have to smog it in 2 years" Well the law says that you don't have to smog it the first time for 5 years.

"I might have fallen off the turnip truck, but not last night!"

Yes P Madrid I do agree with that. The issue with EGR and a plate besides the obvious mixture dilution is blowing out the EGR valve at high boost levels necessary with higher fueling, they come a part often enough at stock levels. Also the EGR manifold has a serious bottle neck at the venturi for the EGR induction

Banks Power 50 State Legal

Banks states their power syatems are 50 state legal and will not void manufactures warranties. Sounds good to me what do you all think?

well, i guess if u feel like blowing your money away and having less power than the guy next to you, go for it! If u want to do it right and not worry about legal stuff, just put a plate, gov springs, gut the cat and run a Vallet switch. or just blow your money away! Many unknowing people do everyday

Banks makes a quality product, while I do not subscribe to thier "no voiding warranty" subscription. Unlike most who love to bash Banks' products (and believe me there are plenty), I have actually owned them. I was happy with what I had, and I don't feel it was that much more than If I had purchased them seperately. However, I would suggest getting together with your local TDR group if possible and seeing and taking rides in other trucks to see what you want to do. I've pi$$ed away plenty of money with other vendors and not been terribly excited with the results. So I guess what I'm saying is do what feels best for you and makes sense to you. Don't be persuaded by opinions and take your time doing it. It's expensive no matter who you get it from, and even more expensive when you have to do it twice.

Well said, Kev. I do not own or plan to buy any of the Banks stuff, its not for me but I have ran several trucks and RVs with their product and so far it puts out what they advertise. Warranty wise, its a gamble, I know of a Dodge dealer that installs Banks and warranty the engine, I know, I sent them back a truck with melted pistons and they cover the damage. . Every thing has a limit you exceed that and its your fault and that goes for all products. The bad thing about Banks is how much it sells for and its hard to custom when you go out of their package deals. I have a Banks fuel plate P/N 62408(#11), acquire from a core engine, that I will be selling if my friend does not want it, Pm if any one is interested.

Pablo

$3400...Ouch!!

The Banks rep called today and said he would give me a discount, so instead of $3700. 00 it's $3400. 00 for their power plus system. Needless to say I'm still exploring my options.
