Lately I have seen several references to "California" trucks, related to various issues - and am aware that various year trucks sold here had Cat Converters and other similar specific items most other states did not - how about a HO like my '02?

I'm mot aware of ANY California specific items affecting operation or engine ratings of my '02 truck compared to out-of-state trucks, at least as specified on the window sticker - or am I missing something?

I'm going from memory here, but the HO was not available from '03-04 (I believe that the '04. 5 is 50 state legal). Also, in 1997 the Kalifornia trucks had EGR. Anyway, something like this.

The 96 trucks had EGR too. There are also differences in the PCM, not sure about the ECM - when I had my 96 I was wanting to get the "federal" PCM.

The HO engine was not offered model year 2000. The model year 2000 parts catalog lists four Engine Control Modules:

··········All manual transmissions w/Federal Emissions

··········All manual transmissions w/California Emissions

··········46RE 4 Speed Auto. w/Federal Emissions

··········46RE 4 Speed Auto. w/California Emissions

The published torque and horsepower ratings are the same for a given transmission for both the Federal or California ECM.

Gary, I'm 99. 99% sure the only power limitation our trucks (meaning 2nd Gen HOs) suffered from was coming from the factory with no fueling/timing box and non-EDM injectors, and only a single, puny turbo :D

I drove past a Dodge dealer a couple nights ago that had at least 2 '04 or '04 1/2 trucks that both had huge "HIGH OUTPUT CUMMINS" banners in their windshields, so I guess the newest HO is in fact Kalifornia approved

Gary- the way I read things, the California trucks since 1998. 5 have all been 235 HP, without an HO option. Check out Joe's 325 article again.

WELL, the window sticker from mine clearly states my '02 is an HO, with 245HP and 505 ft lbs torque - and NO info on that sticker OR the door sticker as to any "California emissions" equipment installed. So unless someone comes up with info the out-of-state HO's had MORE HP and torque, guess they were the same all across the US for '02 at least...

Well,

I'm confused. Everything I've ever read indicated that there is no such thing as a 2002 HO available in California. Gary, did you buy the truck new? Was it originally sold in California?

Enquiring minds want to know!

Or did they actually offer the 245/505 truck in '02 and then go backwards by offering only the 235/460 SO in '03?

I also thought the california trucks all had cats and I never heard of an HO with a cat.

Dave

YUP - bought the truck brand new from local dealer - and yes, I think you are correct that the HO/California limitation started in '03...

As for the cats there were only a few years that even THOSE were required in California as I understand it - my '91 didn't have one, nor does my brother-in-laws '95...

Gary, I thought that your original question was more general. Your '02 HO is the same as an '01 HO . Same HP as the other states.

HO trucks were available in CA in model years 01, 01. 5 and 2002. They were rated at 245hp, and only available with the NV5600. To my knowledge they were the SAME as the "federal" truck. I am not sure if there were differences in the PCM program during those years, I'll try and find out. I know for a fact there were differences in earlier model years (at least 96/97). Not all CA trucks have cats- in fact most do not. They were only put on for late 95-97 trucks (I might be a little off there). I know 98. 5 and up do not have them. What they do have is a resonator, often mistaken for a cat.

Gary, only limitation we have with the g2 ho cali style is the fact our pcm and ecm are branded ca, the last limitation is the pump eth pumps never ran as good as etc pumps. So the answer you are looking for is 2g cali eth's have no disadvantage to 49 state 2g eth's... ... ... I would be interested to see what kind of fines were levied against dc by carb, just to get the eth in. That would be very interesting.....

YUP - that was pretty much what I was looking for - sorta wondering, after reading other general comments as to California differences - had always thought my particular year/model was exempt from those limitations - looks like a few others were confused as well - glad we got it cleared up...
