California PCM

I have a 2001. 5 with a California PCM. I installed Bill's Smart Contoller and the Check Engine Light comes on. With the Smart Contoller out of the circuit the light goes out (after clearing the codes). I have talked to Bill and he says there is nothing else I can do except replace the PCM with a Federal PCM. Has anyone come up with a fix for this or am I stuck either replacing the PCM or just living with the idiot light
