Best "green" car of the year ?

Ok, I see the thread on the SMOG inspections for California, but I didn't want to sort thru multiple pages of posts. I currently live here in Texas but I will be moving to California in probably a year or so to attend Seminary out there. I am currently trying to sell my 3rd gen truck right now and trying to use the equity I have in it to go towards a really good used 2nd gen Cummins to replace my 3rd gen when it sells. How can I know that the 2nd gen truck I buy will meet the California requirements when I end up moving out there, and what parts or service would need to be performed to the 2nd gen truck in order to get the truck up to spec when I move out there? Most of the 2nd gen trucks i've been looking at (there are some nice ones in the TDR classifieds... LOL) have mods on them, so what procedures would I have to take in order to get a modded truck to pass? If somebody could educate me on this i'd really appreciate it. Thanks very much!

If you buy a 2nd Gen, 97 or older, you have no obligation to smog.

Some (most) out of state trucks did not come with the Ca required emision controls.

I'm 99% sure that as long as the truck you purchase retains the Federal required equipment that it came with, you should pass without question.

However, most aftermarket turbos (single or double) any type of non approved Ca injection kits, programmers etc will fail.

Aftermarket air intakes are OK.

Smog Check- OBD test (if applicable), Visual inspection and throttle snap test to check for exessive smoke.

Thanks for the reply. That will be my challenge is to find a good clean 2nd gen that either A - is modified but the seller still has all the stock equipment, or B - a completely stock truck that is super clean. I really hope I don't have to buy a gas rig when my 3rd gen truck sells. It will still be a good year before I move out there to CA, but i'm just trying to look ahead to possible future problems that could arise with the SMOG standards on the new vehicle I purchase.

What part of So cal are you moving to ?

I'll be moving to the Sun Vally/Panorama City area. I will be attending the Master's Seminary there. I am thinking we will probably live in either Newhall or Santa Clarita, although I don't know the area that well and will need to find out what areas to stay away from and what areas are ok. What part of Cali are you in Simplysmn?

Hi

I live in Santa Paula - about 20mi from Santa Clarita.

I just sold my '95 TD, it had a few mods, cat eliminated, pump work etc. It was never inspected since I brought it here from AZ in 2000. I didn't know CA started inspecting diesels - maybe it's a new thing?

I think that's because you had a 95 model. According to the CA DMV website, it is only required on 1998 and later year models. I was thinking of getting a 12v, but those are really hard to find that have been well maintained and are in great shape. I really want a 2nd gen truck, I just don't know if it's worth all the hassle to get one and then have to worry about the SMOG stuff when I move out there.

The Smog inspection will be a suprise to many diesel owners this year.

I am in the High Desert Apple Valley area No Smog but you would be looking at a 2 hour drive each way from my area but they are also less strick up here on smog ruling plus easier to get around it up here also .

Are you just moving out here for school and then going back to Texas? If so, just leave your truck registered in Texas. CA has an exemption for out of state students and registration requirements.

I might look into that. Is there a time limit though, because it will more than likely take me 3 to 4 years to get through Seminary.

Try and find a 2001. 5-2002 24v with rear discs. You're used to pretty good braking and those models will approximate the stopping power you now enjoy.

EArp,

I don't think so. My buddy went to UC Davis for 4 years and had Arizona plates the whole time. Military stationed in CA get the same exemption.

Maintain your permanent address in TX and register at school with a temporary address. When you return home to TX for holidays or visits, do whatever TX inspection is required. 3 to 4 years is just like getting a bachelors degree someplace. I've never know students to register their vehicles in the state they attend school.
