I was able to acquire a bushing for the transfer case range selector rod - Lost the original as I was tidying up wires. I picked it up today and decided to install it after I was done I figured I'm on the ground anyway might as well take a look at the left frontend and see if there's anything obvious that could be making the front left sort of shimmy above 45mph. I was just about to crawl our and something didn't look right:eek:.

I was able to just grab it and wiggle a little and out it came.

By the looks of it it appears someone:rolleyes: installed the rubbers in the caliper backwards, note the top one. Not me for sure, but stupid me for not noticing when I installed the loaded calipers that the rubbers were big end out instead of big end in (between caliper and caliper bracket).

All sorted now, wasn't able to get over 45 when I wen't for dinner, raining cat's and dogs. Will have to check right front to see if the same thing tomorrow. Think I'm going to get new hardware and just do it so I don't have problems down the road, you know - precautionary measures...

Will see when I take it for tire balancing tomorrow, speed limit 65 and a 12 mile stint down the road.

Yep they do that. I put new hardware on and after a few months it happened again. Even flipped the ends around on the rubber inserts. My fix was to up grade to a 2002 axle with a two piston caliper.

I've had this truck since 5/01 @ 75k and many, many sets of pads and probably 4 or 5 sets of loaded calipers, presently 256k and this is 1st time I ever saw this.

I bought my truck with 18 miles on the odo. I think I have replaced my calipers twice, maybe four sets of pads. At least 75% of my miles are towing. Do you drive with one foot on the brake pedal?

No. But I used to have drums on the rear up until about 7 years ago and had only replaced them 1 time before I did the Blackbirds disc conversion. The old rear shoes had over 50k on them a looked almost new. I check pads frequently and when they're about midway I change them. Truck has 256k miles. In the past I've had some issues with front caliper slide areas having burrs on them causing uneven pad wear and changed pads. Then I learned to file flat and round slightly the deeper burr areas. Although remaned loaded calipers are remaned one thing they don't do during the process is to address the slide areas, so before I learned to address them before installing they would wear the pads unevenly and since the calipers had a warranty I'd just get loaded replacements. Since I learned to check and address burrs I've had same calipers for many years.
