Thanks for all the trans advice - Went with Goerend

FMS blue chip box

And I'm being told that they won't sell me just the converter... . kind of a bummer. Has anyone else been told this?

They said they will only sell me the Update kit, Valve body, and Converter as a package... . well that pretty much shoots the deal for me. I had 1000 bucks for the converter, and could 'probably' swing the update kit but now I'm also looking to have to pay some trans guy another 500-1000 bucks to build the trans... ????? Truck only has 55000 miles on it trans shouldn't need a rebuild...

Really bums me out. Can't tow my trailer for beans without the Edge box, and can't tow with it either until I do something with the trans... . I can't see sinking 3-4 grand in a trans that's getting out of control...

Anyone in the Michigan area have any experience doing this trans update themselves???

I think the main thing is that you'll run into other major problems without the update kit, and you need the valve body to get the pressures high enough for the T/C to hold properly (the way I understand it... not necessarily right). The update kit takes care of all the weaker parts that more than likely WILL go bad when you start actually getting all that power through the transmission (not just slipping it away as heat in the T/C).

Do it all... do it right... do it once... . IMHO.

Josh.

(you do have the right company picked out though) :-laf

I would listen to Bill and his crew. In the long run they are saving you money. You probably need new seals to help with the line pressures and your clutches are also worn. Its the valve body in conjunction with the TC that makes tranmissions hold up. If you were to just install the TC you would probably be pulling the transmission and doing all over again soon.

Just my $. 02 worth

So installing the valve body and converter alone isn't going to work?????? They said something about the lip seal... . are they talking about the lip seal around the converter??? I can change that easy enough... I'd rather not rebuild the trans right now.

I belive the lip seal is intenal and not the seal on the valve body.

Here is the deal, some folks would sell you just a TC or just a VB and tell you that every thing is ok, in 6 months you would be pulling your transmission out again for a new TC/VB, clutches seals and and and. In the long run you will be better off getting a full upgrade now. Like they say, do it right the first time so you don't have to do it right the second time.

Okay okay okay... .

I'm breaking down and buying the update kit, valve body and converter..... yeesh!!!!

So much for my tax return!!!

:--)

The auto transmission confounds me, I bought my 99 with the 5 speed, I just had it rebuilt 981. 00 parts and labor, it had 160k miles on it and the 3rd gear syncro went out. I am on my 3rd clutch, but the stock clutch lasted 60k miles, and the second clutch lasted 90-95k, I forget the exact mileage of install and destruction (I blew the center up out, and believe that to be the results of the pilot bearing disentegrating on me). 100k of those miles have been run with DDIII's and the TTPM on #3 setting. With this setup, I pulled trailers sometimes weighing in at 30k lbs during hay season, not quite sure how much my tractor weighed, but it's a 4010 industrial with a frontend loader..... not light by any means... .

What I can't understand is why even buy an auto? To pull heavy you have to invest serious money in them, to modify the engine you have to invest serious money in them, the only advantage you get is in drag racing.

Don't worry about it, the first time you spank a stick guy that has more power than you do it be all worth it! We don't miss shifts... . ;) :D

Because their fun. If I towed something then maybe I would consider a stick... . auto is just wayyyyyyyyyy too much fun. But I didn't buy the truck to tow.

Just to haul ???

Heh, I made more power than Eric at the Dallas Dyno day and he seriously opened a can of whoop butt on me on the 1/8th mile track and on the street!

I'm running 450ish HP and a 14. 3 in the 1/4

Eric ran like 420 at the Dallas Dyno day, and he's running low 13's !????!?!? Dum auto's. . LOL

I think that dyno said 442 or 445 hp for me? Only problem is it was at 3400rpm and rising. Waiting for the track to open but I should be sitting at 12. 9x or 13. 0 now with these injectors. I've challenged a local Ford Lightning and a 99 Chevy Ext cab 6. 0 gasser with a whipple charger to race on RaceDay sometime in march.

Next time on the street remind me to turn the box up ;)

I'm trying to make arrangements to cometo the March 15th DFW dyno day... ... ..... don't suppose you would be going again would you? Did Floor It help you out with what you needed?

I'm gonna try to do the upgrade on my auto myself. Granted, the warranty is gonna be shot, I can't afford the extra loot to have someone else do the upgrade. Being a poor ol' college boy, I'll be doing good just to buy the parts! I'm experienced in mechanics and fine machine work (machinist), so it shouldn't be hard at all for me. I know some of the parts are very meticulous, and there are quite a few diagnostics checks both before and after the rebuild. If you really grasp the concepts of operation, and understand what role each part plays and how it works, things will go easily.

I was told I need everything. At 422 HP, Bill kinda laughed when I called him up and asked him if just a TC / VB would hold... His reply "Sure, all of about 2 seconds :-laf" Oh well.

Good Luck!

I feel for you. I went therough the EXACT same thing with my '01 2500. I was lied to by the stealer (and I was suprised?) After one year and the uncomfortable realization that the only way to get my truck to do what I was told it was supposed to do would elvoido the warranty and cost me near $6k to get it done.

For the same money, I traded up to an '02 3500 HO 6spd... . With warranty.

But just think, you'll never have any problems again!!! :D

Kris,

Good luck to you, your so close to James, why not just let him do the work.

If you don't take care of all the weak links and end up smoking your trans you will contaminate the new TC and VB and then you would be in the position of asking for warranty after they "told you so". Sounds like you are doing the full meal deal. Good choice.

I am in the same boat. Need a transmission, but $5500 is NOT gonna happen, shoot as far as that goes $3000 is not gonna happen. I will sell the truck and be done with it before I spend that kind of money. I would do the transmission myself but it is my daily driver, it can't be down for the time I would need to make a living and get it done at the same time, with my work schedule it would take a week or better. The prices of transmission mods really irritate me, irritated at myself for not holding out and buying a manual transmission in the first place more than anything. I have learned my lesson though.

I can relate to the expense of modifing the auto. But ask anyone who has got the entire DTT deal, myself included. It was the best money I spent on my truck, hands down. All the rest of the mods would be wasted if the trans couldnt get the power to the ground. Racing isnt the only thing the auto is better for. I plow snow, and the auto is way faster, and easier to drive.
