I'm moving up to a new truck (1st gen for sale) and was wondering how people are doing with the reggie class change from commercial to passenger plates? I did it about 7 years ago the last time I registered a truck, but this time I'm doing it from new. I know I have to have a cap etc. but is ther anything else I need to do? I don't know how/if they're enforcing the modified law (over 5000# pick up truck law) I gotta have pas. plates- too many parkways around here!

Wayne,

From what I've heard from a friend who drives his Y2K CTD, he doesn't have any problems on the Parkways. Obviously you'r going to have to change the plates from Comm to Pass, which is what he did, however I wouldn't expect to be hassled. I'm expecting delivery any day now on my 04, and that's my plan.

Tony

PS: Besides, I believe many of the larger SUV's out there are over 5k, so with a cap, or at least a cover, we should be OK.

The rules... and how they changed

Well, here is the skinny... . the rules for the parkways have NOT changed. You can not drive on any NYS parkway with commercial plates..... period. Also, regardless of the plate type... vehicles over 20 ft long are prohibited on all parkways as are all DRW vehicles.

What has changed: if your pickup weighs LESS than 5000 lbs, then you can register it as a passenger or commercial vehicle. If your pickup weighs over the 5000 lbs limit it must be registered as a commercial vehicle.

As before... . there was a conversion process that allowed vehicles converted to passenger carrying (cap, seats, seat belts, and over 45" headroom) or converted to camper (stove, bed, and sink). Converting to passenger plates using this process is done on a "honor" system as there is no inspection to confirm the conversion.

So, how do I know all this? I live 2 miles from a Parkway and my '99 QC DRW was "converted" to a passenger vehicle by adding a cap with really dark tint that hid the fact that I did not have any seating. During my impromptu meetings roadside with our NYS Troopers I was educated on the finer details of the law governing our parkways. This knowledge was further honed by a stop to the barricks and a visit to the NYS DMV. Couple that with a few court dates... . and the result is my '04. 5 QC DRW is registered commercial.

The online NYS DMV site also has a blurp on the pass vs comm status for pickups.

SUV's are exempt from the new pickup law changes... . they are defined as passenger vehicles already.

FJfonda,

Another guy I know with a CTD was telling me he gets hit harder at the bridge crossings in the metro NY area, has this been you'r experience also? BTW, beautiful Grady White, are you on LI?

So basically nothing has changed. I always experienced the honor system too, but that was many years ago and before the weight break. Tony, the PANYNJ bridges near me charge by the axle so a Dually is considered 2 axles and at $6 per that is $12. 00 per trip.

I had an '81 D350 Dually that I made custom steel 16X12 wheels and had 33X12. 50 BFG's. I got those toll takers every time.

AFrisina,

I have an EZPASS setup for the DRW. Yes . . NYS Bridge Authority whacks us bigtime. Cars cross the Hudson river for $1. 00 and we Penny up a big fat $2. 50. And it is about the same same kind of exponential increase for the the metro area bridges.

We are up by Poughkeepsie area but make it into the LI Sound to fish quite often. The Grady is a great boat... actually got it out by the Shinnicock (sp?) canal on LI.
