Alright guys, I'm getting ready to put my pickup back together(cam reinstall). The EEP cam I took out was retarded one tooth and marked as such in yellow paint on the cam gear so that it'd be easy to reinstall, but I had to get a new cam gear because of a tone ring problem. Anyway, I'll make a long story short by saying the sharpie marks I made on my new gear came off in the process of heating the gear for reinstallation so I have to start from scratch because I don't have the old gear to go from anymore. I realize this is rather simple in concept and I think I have it right so I've taken a couple of pictures. Can someone tell me if I'm heading in the right direction before I close this thing up? I want the camshaft retarded one tooth when I'm done. One other question is in regards to the camshaft rotation, when the engine is turning over does the camshaft turn clockwise or counterclockwise when looking at the gear from the front of the pickup? Thanks in advance for your help and please forgive my moment of stupidity! Hopefully I can get some of these pictures to load.

Sorry i can't help you out, but please forgive my ignorance.

What's the reasoning for retarding the cam 1 tooth ?

Thanks

Curtis

The crank goes clockwise, the cam is counter and the fuel pump gear is clockwise.

The cam gear is 1 tooth retarded, the pump gear is timed correctly to compensate for the cam gear being 1 off.

Sorry guys. . I deleted my posting. . I'm not sure what I was looking at. . I was thinking there was an Idler... (Wrong engine. . )

but looking at your pics. . when the engine is at TDC. . when it rolls over one more tooth, that should put the cam at TDC... so I think you have it the way you want... (But hey. . I couldn't tell what gear was what... )

thanks for the replies guys, I was thinking that was right, but thought I'd double check before putting the whole thing back together and finding its not right! After I posted I went out and started our other pickup to check which direction the crank turns so now I know it's indeed retarded. I'm not sure why they have the cam retarded one tooth, but it seems to work very well so I want it to be that way again! Anyway, thanks again for your help, it should be back together tonight or tomorrow morning, the valve train is all back together, valves adjusted, valve cover installed, just the front cover and coolers left!
