Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Pump Questions

Allright 24v experts, truck has been running great until this morning. Now, I have a rough idle (sounds like a nasty pull truck with lots of timing), and lots of eye burning white/grey smoke. (idle and cruising) Turning on the comp makes it worse, so it seems like it is at least partly timing related. It is also hard to start. I thought it could be CPS, but tachometer works fine. Could it be a stuck injector??, injection pump, any ideas. I'm at work now, so i can't put it on the scanner, but i retrieved the codes off the odometer and got a p0230 in the ecm. For what it's worth truck runs strong once under boost, just nasty rough idle and lots of smoke. like i said, it sounds and looks like a truck with really huge injectors. Thanks for any help

Hmmm. What year is your rig? I checked the codes in my book (98), and the 200 series codes relate to injectors. I do not specifically see the 230 code you mentioned. I suspect your rig is different year than mine.

How do you get codes from the odometer?

Hmm. .

Check the wires going to your MAP sensor.

Make sure that none of them have been yanked out or on.

If not then its probably your VP44.

Hmmmm. I will get the scanner on it tonight. I know the pumps do some strange things when they go south, but the truck sure runs strong for a bad injection pump. As far as the codes off the odometer, just go key on, off, on, off, on and leave on the last time and it will go through and start showing numbers. Anybody ever have an injector go south??, what were the symptoms??

Phil... I have the book on disc... looked up the code and Roadwarrior is correct

code shows. . problem is being detected in transfer pump circut

maybe disconnect battery for a few min. . let it reset itself and see if that clears it up

A little more info on what exactly is happening. The truck never threw a check engine light. I just tried to retrieve the codes while at work because i couldnt do anything else. The only code is the 0230, which i confirmed on the scanner last night is as described above, transfer pump voltage out of parameters. This makes sense, as i do not use the factory transfer pump or wiring. I have no clue how long that code has been there. Truck was running great monday night, and tuesday a. m. it wasn't. I had been running it pretty hard on the way home the night before. No water in oil, oil in water, external oil or water leaks, etc, etc etc, so its not the headgasket. I am going to swap injectors tonight and see if it clears up. I did a cylinder performance test with the scanner last night and the idle does not change when you disable cylinder #1. So it appears whatever the cause, #1 is the culprit. If its the injectors good deal, if not, i'll have only wasted about 45 min of labor. Just trying to bounce ideas off of some of the brains out there. I'll keep you posted, thanks for the info.

230 is transfer pump out of range that means too little or to much amperage.

If the connectors are clean change the pump.

Bob

Just wondering what kind of scanner do you have, price, and where you got it. I I'm in the market for one.

Thanks,

matt

Matt, the scanner is my dad's, it is a snap on. bob4x4, I dont have the factory pump, or wiring, so the voltage out of range makes sense. I should know more in the morning, im going to change out the injectors then. Planned on doing it tonight but had to stay late at work. Really would like to hear from someone who actually had an injector go bad. What were the symptoms??
