I was just wondering if anyone has had there cam sencor go bad and if anyone had replace it on there own. When it went out how did you know that it was going out. My pickup cuts out not all the time but there is not a pattern on when and how it cuts out. It might be at a idle and maybe 70mph. This is what the dealership said my problem is and the only code is P1693.

Jim,

I had and 01 3500 that the cam sensor went out on. The engine would cough, and the check engine light would come on, then would go out after a short period of time. Then one day the light came on and would not go out. I don’t remember the code but I had it read at two different Auto Zone part stores. They did not charge me to read the codes.

I bought a new sensor from the Dodge dealer and in stalled it myself. Seems like it cost about $60. It has only one bolt holding it in place but is a bit hard to get to. I used a flex extension to reach the bolt.

Hope this is some help.

Our 2001. 5 has what I belive to be a Cam Position Sensor issue. I purchased the sensor from the local Cummins parts house for $40. 00. Much less expensive than the local dealership. The failure mode is tach goes to zero and power drops off and engine stumbles. I posted a thread to get some response from someone who has changed it but no one has replied.

I tried to change mine and didn't have any luck, I couldn't get the wires off in place and I wasn't exactely sure of what size the one bolt was, but after messing around with it for about two hours I guess I moved the wires enough that I never had a problem after that. A while later my vacuum pump started to leak so while I had it out fixing that I changed the cam sensor just for the heck of it since I already had one. It's alot easier with the vacuum pump out so if yours is weeping at all do both jobs at once.

My truck stoped running either at a light or at 50m/hr. Just like you would turn off the key. It even stumbled a few times without stoping. This was hapening once or twice a week. With no power enhancement. No codes. I changes the crank position sensor behind the starter last week and has been running good since. This sensor has something to do with the timming of the pump. VP44.

Thank you guys I guess I will try to fix it this weekend. Sorry took so long to write back but my wife just had a future TDR member. Drove the pickup yesterday when I got back and it ran fine for 30 miles then shut it off to go into the store and when I started it back up it cutout missed all the way home.
