You know-the side where electrons flow a lot less freely, where the engine doesn't hide under the cowl, and where your kidneys quickly remember what old technology Dodge front suspension was all about :D ... ... .

Dad bought a '92 W250 CC yesterday. Lots of km (257000 showing on odometer but speedo isn't working) and one of the ugliest trucks I've ever seen (resembles a big grey bag of walnuts actually :) )-there isn't a straight panel on it including the roof! Only options are tilt wheel and delay wipers, radio didn't work, brakes aren't great, needed a couple U-joints... ... but the old girl runs great, the Getrag is quiet, and it surprisingly drives pretty decent. That's what's important for now anyways-and the price was fair too-$5400 CDN. So we'll take a couple months to go through and tweak on the stuff that needs it before he takes off on holidays to BC-savings on fuel alone between it and our old '86 with a 440/NP435 will pay for a lot of repairs.....

We acquired a Crew Cab a couple years back and were planning to swap in a propane 440 for trailer towing-but it got put on hold pending acquisition of a Cummins. The new truck will donate its mechanicals to the Crew Cab probably next spring depending on how the winter treats us.

So I've been merrily surfing away through here yesterday and today making notes about various things like the Isspro tach part #'s and pump tweaks. My truck will be getting a turbo upgrade this spring/summer-so the old HX35 and E-brake will probably find its way to this one too. Probably some exhaust upgrades before he starts pulling-and of course gauges. I have the original pyro left from my truck-boost gauge and we're set. For right now though just basic stuff-fluid changes, valve set-you know, stuff to get a good solid baseline before you start chucking parts at it.

Looking forward to learning from you guys over here and maybe down the road being able to contribute a trick or two!

This ain't the dark side........

Oo. It's the looney-bin Oo.

Congrats on your new truck. Stuff the running gear in the crewcab, and you'll have a real truck... ... .

good lock the only bad thing with the swap is that you never want to quit driving the crew cab when the cummins is init exept to bomb it :D

Dark side?

Na, we just run on 6 volts instead of 12 :D Hey Nice work on the crew cabs there 4-door fellas! 83 Crew Cab, that is an awesome truck, I did however get frustrated when I saw that nice front seat and realized where my rear will be planted tomorrow morning  Speaking of the dark side, how is the room in the back of those body style crew cabs? I wish my club cab was a crew cab, oh well.

Good luck with your dark side projects!

Good Purchase

I'll have to see this pig. LOL Good idea on the conversion, that'll turn a few heads thats for sure. .

Give me a call anytime you need a hand.

Looks like converting the old Crew Cabs to Cummins power is catching on here! LOL

I just stripped the donor truck this weekend. 91. 5 Cummins Getrag 4x4.

Going into a 83 Crew Cab

There are a few house projects to wrap up and then we will start this conversion rolling. The 440 in there moves well but it is really harsh on the mileage!!

Good Luck on your project,

Paul

Little closer look under the hood of the old girl today... ... on the magic link that connects the bellcrank to the injection pump, one of the rod ends apparently failed at some previous point in time so a brilliant soul improvised with mechanics wire  ... needless to say full throttle is not quite achieved! My brother is the parts manager at the local Chrysler dealer-so a new link is winging its way to us as we speak. That should make 'er step out a little better..... reality says it's still gonna be a long ways from my truck (slipped my DragCOMP on today-and true to reports on level 5x5 the clutch is the weakest link!) but it should pull the trailer as good as the 440 on a lot less fuel. We'll get the weak links worked out before the swap becomes reality!

Jase-I don't think you wanna see this-if you look in the dictionary under "rough" you'll see a pic of this truck. It still has the stickers on the door from its initial life on a service rig... . and like I said previous there is not a straight panel on it! LR taillight is another RR one turned upside down and held in with lag screws..... the V-drafts are siliconed closed... . she's a real beaut. But it runs sweet-can't believe it! Amazing how quiet the 1st gen 12 valves are-guess as the injection pressures went up for emissions over time so did the combustion knock. Dad drove it home from Balzac (following me due to the aforementioned speedo failure)-we ran 110 km/h all the way and he made it on 1/8 tank. Hopefully everything mechanical is as solid as it seems to be so far... ...

Jason

JHansen, all you need to do is sweet tune this thing and crank out 300+ and your all set. Ok, you could fix the tail-light thing but what a sleeper it would make. :-laf :-laf

You would sure turn some heads.

Good luck with the project.

These 1st gens get addicting!

I bought one now! The dealer where my brother works took in a '92 (or maybe '93-can't remember now) D350 RC on trade-and they wanted to move it quick-so I bought it..... this truck should supply the rest of the parts needed for the Crew Cab. Ton of kilometers on it (350000!) and the front end is rough-but it runs good, recently rebuilt automatic, and the box is straight and rust-free. Doors are decent too-and it's a loaded truck. So I'll have a 1st gen engine for sale one of these days! Gonna go pick 'er up tomorrow and drive it out to the farm where it will probably unceremoniously be gutted... . don't get angry though-its soul will live on in another body... . :D

Now I just gotta start transplanting!

JHanson

Lag bolts! and silicone on the vent windows! Makes me feel like a d@mn brain surgen with the little fixes I've done. Maybe you could take a picture and enter it into one of those 4x4 mag ugly truck contests? (Please don't let me insult anyone but any truck to the level he is describing could be ugly). Keep us posted on your progress, good luck and have fun.

That gray lump is ugly-I gotta get some pics and post on my website I guess just to convey its grotesqueness (wow is that even a word?) Everything is smashed/dented/bent in some form or another... ..... the D350 I'm picking up in contrast has peeling paint but is straight anyways-ugly of a different form :) ... ... .

I'm gonna insure the D350 through the weekend and put some miles on it puttering around the country just to check out the condition of the motor and transmission. I haven't driven a 1st gen for quite a while now-so it should be interesting!
