What is the difference between the camper special package springs and the regular springs? Is there an increase in the capacity, rate, or is it just the addition of the overloads and sway bar.

The dealer quoted me a price of 1300 for the parts. Seems very high considering the package only costs 95 bucks.

Jeff

Same here, I thought it was the helper springs, and sway bar. May also include the trailer wiring and plug. That's what I got.

Good luck, hope you can find what you,re looking for at a decent price. Go there with the take it or leave it attitude. It took me 4 dealers bfore I got my price.

Ron

Jeff,

Ditto with zman. Trailer wiring and plug is with the Tow Pkg.

Jeff, you might want to check to see what some other dealers have on the lots if, your not happy with the one you test drove. You might want to go with the 4. 10.

If you don't find what you want, then order it :D

VeeTenJeff

The camper special is what you think it is, I believe it's just overload springs and swaybar.

HTH,

That's waht I thought with the camper package, but they are quoting entire replacement leaf packs. As much as I want to get into a diesel fast, it looks like I'm gonna have to keep searching or order one. I'm really liking the graphite metallic color.

Yea for gray

Hay jeff dito on the graphite metallic ,my fave too. I got a new truck in 1984 and at that time thay called it charcoal gray metallic and I have wated all most 20 years for the color to come back out. Finely my wate is over and now have a 2001. 5 2500 in graphite metallic and man its love all over again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!LOL.

camper package=good

My 3500 has the camper package. Whatever dodge did they did it right!! This truck handles the load very well (a 3000# alpinlite camper and 9000# cargo trailer). I suppose that the sum of parts are much more expensive when purchased outright insted of as a package on the truck. If you could only trade in the parts you take off to install the heavier ones?? Probably not. Good luck.

Hey Jeff, good to see you this weekend...

Ask yourself: Why are you getting the camper package? Are you going to be using it for a Slide in Camper? If not I don't think it's absolutely necessary. I do not have that package but my girlfriend does. Her truck rides like a rock compared to mine. The springs in the rear are designed for heavy loads anyway and can handle alot of weight.

Nicole ended up with the camper package because it was on the lot. oh well.

It's up to you. If you want to get the 2002, that graphite color is SWEET

If your getting a great deal on that 2001 I'd go for it. These guys dont know what they are talking about on that spring package. I bet they didn't ask the tech in back!

One other note, the name Traded-V10-for-a-Cummins is already taken :D

WHiel I don't need the camper package right now, I might in the future. I like a stiff riding truck. Kind of reminds me of my first vehicle. The one I was looking at was an 02. I'm kind of on the fence because I'm not really crazy about the color. It just doesn't look right on a 2wd

I agree with jsimpson. If had to do it over again, I'd skip the camper package. With airbags, you don't need the helper springs which make the rear of an unloaded 2500 bounce all over the place. Helwig makes a more robust stabilizer bar than the stock unit. The trailer wiring and heavy duty turn signal relay are no big deal to get on your own. You can definitely tell the difference in unloaded ride quality between trucks with and without the camper package.

The overloads don't do anything when the truck is unloaded. It takes quite a load to get the truck to settle down enough to engage the overloads. The sway bar alone is worth the price of the camper option. You could always remove the overloads if you don't like them.

camper package

The overloads on my 2001 3500 just touch with the 3000+# camper on the truck!! Where they shine is when you are in a sidewind or the curves. Then they come into contact and seem to help prevent excessive body roll along with the stouter anti sway bar. I think mine rides quite nice when unloaded, it is a TRUCK after all.

If you do not let air out of your rear tires when not hauling things, then you are going to be all over the road. I run around 42 lbs in the rear bobtail, 60 with the 5er.

With Trailer

Jsut for fun I priced a 2001 and 2002 like mine was built.

2001 28,200

2002 29,700

2001 is still very close to what I paid in June.

Ok, I think I got the low-down on the camper special group. I was at a dealer this morning and was comparing the spring numbers between the camper special group and non-camper group. The spring numbers were -016A- on both sides regardless If it has the camper goup or not. This was for the 2500. the 3500 had -017A- springs.

So I talked to a parts guy who seemed to know what he was talking about. He said that indeed the camper group is the overloads and sway bar and misc hardware. the spring rates are the same. HOWEVER, the overload leaves were not available separately from chrysler... they come as a unit with the leaf pack.

Oh yeah, this dealer didn't have a truck on the lot for under 40k:eek:

VeeTenJeff, what they say the price is and what they will sell it for once you get past the goofballs up front are very different numbers. Do your homework on sites like carsdirect.com and take the print out with you. Tell them you want to deal with a direct sales, internet sales or fleet sales person. Tell them what you are willing to pay, if they do not want to deal, then go see Joe Kinslaid at Lynnwood. Tell him Chris D. referred you. SNOKING

Oh I know the prices on the window are much higher than is expected to pay. I have a folder of printouts that I bring from Edmunds.com. Almost every configuration imaginable. I don't howver expect the dealer to drop a 40k truck to 29k. It would be nice, but it's not gonna happen

You can get a 2002 3500 4x6 CTD HO with 6 speed and everything else but leather from Melton Sales in OKLA. for $32,800. That is their asking price, they have several, you can check them out on their web site. The discribed truck would list for over $40,000.
