Does anybody know of a nice RV campground in the Durango, CO area? Would prefer one with shade trees and a swimming pool.

This isn't much help, but I remember staying at a campground a little north of town, the campground backed up right to the steam train railroad tracks. Let's see that was in... 1976? I don't know if it's still there or not. I remember my folks complaining because they charged something like $8 a night!! Seems to me it did have a pool.
Sorry I couldn't help you more. #ad

In the Trailer Life Campground Directory it's called "United Campground of Durango" your're right the train runs right through the campground & does have a pool. Of course the ad's always look good in the directory I would really like to get first hand opinions of the campgrounds in the area. Thanks

"United" is Ok and is on the north end of town, but you still have to drive into town. There is a much nicer campground about 5 miles north of town near the Trimble Hot Springs. I don't remember the name, but it is along the Animas River and has lots of trees. I know that they fill up in the summer.

There is also a KOA a little further north with a pretty setting, but they pack a lot campers into a samll space.

I prefer to go on up to Eureka, about 8 miles past Silverton. It is the site of an old mining town and there are no services, but there is a lot of flat ground and easy access (and it is free). From there you can go a lot directions depending on your vehicle. I spend several weekends every summer up there and take my ATV's. The only time it gets crowded is around the 4th of July.

there is also the Alpine Rose. It's great, the mgmt. is great and the staff is great.

I have the address and phone number at home so will post it later tonight or tommorrow.

We've stayed there several times and it's always been a wonderful experience.

There is a place called Priest Gulch 1/2 way between Durango and Telluride. A more beautiful campground I have never seen. If you can, call them. They sell out the summer months early to Texans with money and RVs. Dispite that, it is still very nice.

I stayed at Hermosa Meadows last summer in the second week of June I think. Don't remember the Highway # but it is on the right going toward Silverton about 5-7 miles out. (estimate) I don't recall a pool but they do have a pond you can trout fish in(they charge by the pound), or you can fish in the river within 50 yards or so from the camp. They have some spots that backed up to the river so close you could the water hitting the rocks. My wife and I really enjoyed it.
