I live in Southern California (easy... I vote conservative). I'm thinking of taking the family and 28' fifthwheel to an area like Bass Lake or nearby over New Years. We then could drive the truck (w/ chains) into Yosemite for a day trip. For those of you in the know, what are some good campgrounds to stay for that time of year. We might be able to stay at a friend's property at Bass Lake. The trailer should be okay for a little bit of snow. The FW tank is insulated but not heated.

All suggestions are welcome.

thanks,

Tom

The majority of the National Forest campgrounds are closed for the winter. If you want to visit i wouls stay at the Pines in Bass lake and leave the trailer at home. Then you can make the road trips, probably cheaper in the long run and the cabins at The Pines are very nice. Wou wont need to chain up but make sure you crry them the CHP will want to see that you have them. Yosemite is beautiful in the winter, you woun't be able to get to Glacier Point though.

It is a very nice spot I think your family would really enjoy it.

If you really wanted to go first class the Awahnee Hotel in Yosemite Valley is amazing, you got to check it out if you go.

KOA in Midpines was nice last September (2007 that is) when we stayed there. Kind of funny getting in and out of there but we did OK w/ 32' 5th wheel. Was about an hour drive to the valley floor off the 120 if I remember correctly.

We looked at some of the motels/lodges near Yosemite and ended up with sticker shock. Any suggestions of reasonably priced rooms in the area would be appreciated. We will leave our trailer in Paso Robles and just drive up to Yosemite area in the truck.

Indian Flat Rv park is located on hwy 140 about 20 min drive to yose. valley floor. This park is open year round and is situated about 1,500 ft. No snow to worry about. Ive had my 5th wheel parked there since about oct. 06 , been workin on the improvement of yose. valley floor since then and have about a year to go. I think they charge about 32 a nite for full hook-ups

Well, we have looked at the motel accomodations nearby and gave up on that route. Wow are they pricey! We will bring the trailer and will stay at one of the campgrounds, either Indian Flat (close to the valley floor) or High Sierra RV park in Oakhurst (looks decent but a farther drive).

Prestonmck, does your 5th wheel have heated tanks? I'm concerned about freezing temps in late December.

Yosemite

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but last year about this time my daughter took me for a ride thru Yosemite and it seems she said they wouldn't let you in without a 4 wheeler.

I dont have heated tanks and have been insulating my water line to trailer so it doesnt freeze. I have yet to have a problem with my black water tank freezing . The temps dont stay cold long enough to cause any problems.
