ex-wife is going to gay rallys

Greg what did ya think of our home away from home with heat!!!!!! 7 more days and in the saddle again Will try it for real then.

BIGNASTY,

Need to hear from Greg, but that is a pretty neat setup. How long does it run before adding wood? Looks like backpack luxury.

Hey BIG, Just noticed this thread! That is an outstanding Camp! Perfect! Do you backpack in? Snowshoes, skis or snowmobile? How much does the tent and stove weigh?

My tent is an old surplus wall tent and arctic stove. Way to heavy for anything other than a tailgate camp from a truck or snowmobile.

I've seen the little "sheepherder" stoves. Great for small spaces and you dont need to "log" yer camping area for fuel. Just need dry stuff to burn, including pine needles. GregH

Sorry been out of town had a Government kind of meeting and could not get to a computer. How ever you get it back in the mountains is up to you. I think the tent with pole and stakes or snow anchors weigh in at 3 pounds and the stove in the black bag weighs 4 pounds. As far as the time that it lasts is up to you the more heat the less time the wood last. In the dead of winter you can get it to 70 degrees in the tent. We put a tarp under the tent I'm not going to lay directly on the snow. It gets plenty hot see the pic. We have two different sizes one is a four man (and you would have to be VERY FREINDLEY) and a 8 man

It is Greg we use this as a spike camp tent with or without the stove. The stove is nice because as a spike camp we are more interested in the hunting than the gourmet meals so the heat stove is two fold hot water and heat for the tent. I like the MRE thing I see some of our military complain about the MRE's they should have tried some of the CRAP that they wanted up to live on and they would shut up MOST OF IT WAS MADE BEFRORE I WAS EVEN BORN FOR CHRIST SAKE!!!!!!!!!

Yep, I would imagine, heat and boiled water for dried food would be the priorities. I did want to ask you, what foods you normally packed. MRE's sound perfect. Instant oatmeal? Jerkey? C-rats are not even space savers, with the boxes of cans. I am familliar with the LRRP's(long Range Ration Patrol), forerunner of the MRE's(?). Yes, some of those meals were already growing gray beards when I was serving:-laf! 1942-45 C-rations were seen on occasion. Korean War era C-Rations were common. All boxes with cans. Dried foods were issued only for patrols and bush wackin'. (one meal a day, lots of calories, IIRC)!)

I have found that a Pot of boiled rice at the end of the day is outstanding , but thats another story:D!

Hey BIG, When you have an opportunity, would you do a food and personal gear "junk on the Deck" layout and post the photos with a description for everyone to see? GregH

What happened to K-rations, did they finally run out of them? (never thought that would happen). They were a great improvement over ours, (anything would be a great improvement over ours).

You remember the "Cruel and unusual punishment" they complained about at Guantanamo Bay prison?!? Well, they had to feed those guys something!!! :-laf

Great looking setup, BIG, I love the tent, but I'm scared of the little stove!! :D I'd be wrapped up around that thing like a 6' bullsnake on a 2 pound rat!! Now, that second one is warm enough for me!! Just don't let the embers settle on the tent roof... ... don't ask me how I know that's bad.....

HHhuntitall. Been trying to find an opportunity to convey the following for a long time, now you have given me the chance. The K-rations have worked their magic again. If being given to the prisoners at Guantanamo the Muslim smokers will have to quit smoking or go back to the method employed before as the cigarettes contained in K-rations were 'Naked and Unashamed' meaning without filters. Muslims cannot let tobacco touch their lips, so to smoke a tobacco cigarette the end of a cigarette was placed between the index and middle finger near the palm joint, the hand is closed as to make a fist, the hand holding the cigarette is placed to the mouth, much the same as if your hand is cold, but instead of blowing they suck. Does take some practice. Hadn't seen that done for 65 years until a few days ago on TV, he was in Afghanistan, I also noticed he was carrying a British No. 4 . 303 Lee-Enfield rifle, the same kind I carried for 3 1/2 years. (just thought of it, the filters for cigarettes, 'pardon the pun' was a Godsend for Muslim cigarette smokers, saved that hand for a more pleasurable and just as satisfying task).

What is it your looking for Greg? JUNK ON THE DECK ?? if your referring to what to bring on our hunting trips ? WE BRING a whole lot more than the hunters do because THEY ARE OUR MULE'S :-laf We do have a list of to bring items it depends on the hunt 1st and 2ond hunts are usually warm and no need to bring polar suits but 3,4,5 can get cool to cold and 6th is polar expedition style. I have a list of to bring items ill put up . I dont like that hunt its to FRIGGEN COLD and not very enjoyable. But that is the one where the BIG BOYS come out to feed in the open because after the rut and the rest of the crowd is done they have to pack on some pounds or they might not make it threw the winter so the feed day and night.

As far as food!!!!!!!!! I dont EVEN ASK SIL and wife do the cooking and what ever they have planned is OK for most. Most of the hunters dont do so well hunting ALL DAY LONG. Its a LONG LONG DAY 3 AM untill O dark 30 Then at least an hour ride back to camp. Leave in the dark come back in the dark. Lots of the hunters ask about how dark it is and the ride. Just hang on and dont ride to close to the one in front of you or you will taste PINE TREE :-laf

It doesnt take to many smacks to the face before they figure it out. The eyes on the horse are big enough to see whats happening.

As for food we have roast turkey,Hams,Steaks,BIG A** Pork Chops,Salmon, pork ribs, Beef ribs, If we get lucky and someone drops an ELK or DEER a roast, always salad, fresh baked bread, what ever kind of Veg ie, always potato of some kind, Pies , cobblers, pastries, and if you are hungry its your fault because there is way more than is needed. Breakfast is the usual eggs, bacon, ham steak, home fries, biscuits, gravy (sausage or my favorite ELK Gravy) When it hits the table WATCH THE H OUT im eating and dont mind my elbows ill lick them clean when im done they have all kinds of different pan cakes waffles and this to KILL for oatmeal I love the stuff. Lunch is ham/roast beef sandwiches cookies made the day before fruit to keep things MOVING :-laf And lots and lots of CLEAN PURE MT MOUNTAIN WATER. best tasting elicser around milk at all meals coffee (both kinds always on the stove. OJ at breakfast if he can get out of jail :-laf I can not remember a SINGLE PEROSON that has said anything about not eating VERY WELL. The Wife and SIL do a BANG UP JOB. And all of the food is brought out to you buy TWO OF THE MOST HANSOME GUYS ON THE TRAIL (because we are the only ones on the trail most times) Jason and I and our gang of marry little mules

Trophy Spike Camps are a WHOLE DIFFERENT BALL GAME. its all about the hunting and if you GET TO EAT so much the better. IT TAKES AWHILE TO STARVE

Some of us have talked before about the use of SOLID bullets or non expanding the smile on his face was after Jason and I had CHASED THE S. O. B. over two mountain passes and out overnight on trail because of one. His smile was out done by our tired A**es They came up the next day to take a pic.

The last pic,,,, nothing and I mean nothing beats a pot of hot ELK stew at the end of a spike camp day. That is my favorite pic. HOME AT LAST

Sleeping Bag (Rated 0 degrees or lower) Light leather gloves, cold weather gloves

Good Quality cold weather, waterproof boots Cold weather jacket or coat

Shoes for around camp Wool or flannel shirts/sweaters

Cold weather cap with earflaps Plenty of wool socks and underwear

Blue jeans and a pair of wool pants Washcloths, towels, soap

Polypropylene or Thermax long johns Shaving kit, toothbrush, etc.

Rain gear (Gortex jacket) WATER BOTTLE for the duration of the trip

Frameless day pack or fanny pack Binoculars, hunting knife

Flashlight and extra batteries Aspirin, sunscreen, chapstick, with SPF protection

Licenses and Conservation Stamp Camera and plenty of film, and extra batteries

Florescent orange coat, vest and/or cap (Rifle) and two boxes of ammunition

Gators (Bow) and 2 dozen arrows, broadheads

You can drop the pack frame and BEAR SPRAY has been added but IMO if you need it your pretty much SOL any way so why anger the bear before he eats your A. I wear Blue jean pretty much all the time but when the DEEP snow hits I go WOOL with the high tech underwear on under it. Pac's are a MUST in the snow. Shaving kit come on im not out to win a contest but the wife wont kiss me with a prickly beard so if you plan on kissing something OK. Mostly what ever you can put in a G I duffel bag is good to go. I like those they are easy to tie down and can carry a bunch of stuff. Most think the need more than they do.

I dont bow hunt I think its cruel and dont like to see it hunting so what ever that takes. BIL and FIL bow hunt

MY BIGGEST THING IS TO LEARN HOW TO SHOOT at LONG DISTANCES starting at 300 yards out to what ever your comfort zone is and just remember I DONT LIKE TO CHASE DOWN YOUR GAME

An OUTSTANDING Post, BIG! You touched on everything! As much for me as anyone else checking in and considering a big game hunt!

I usually wear wool bibs while hunting, from fall through Winter, very quiet and comfortable, even when wet! Fell through a snow drift, into a creek, one year. I was wet but still plenty warm!

I need to pick up some long handles as you suggested. Mine are worn out:-laf! Probably can do without shaving gear! Aint gonna kiss anybody, 'cept Daisy the Mule:-laf, right below the eye, on the cheek:D;). Used to do that with my Molly Mule. She would go plum still and just watch me Oo. ! Smelly critter:-laf!

A Junk on the deck(Similar to a Junk on the bunk inspection)

An empty pack with all your gear laid out for inventory. GregH

Important gear

Yep, I did an inventory and it was pictured but not mentioned. SUNGLASSES!. Dont ferget 'em! Trying to hunt when you are near snowblind is not a good time! GregH

Hey BIG! Is that you sittin' on the Horse with the breast collar! My Beard looked like that when I was 30 years old! Its pure WHITE, now:-laf! GregH
