You get Giardia once, . . . . . . . and you'll NEVER want it again.

MT streams and rivers look GIN CLEAR but you are rite. Hunched over in the bushes puking from both ends is not something I want to add to a resume.

I used to drink from the runoff creeks, up high, many moons ago. Dont do it any more! I did not get sick, however there were many opportunities do do so!

Hmmm, Maybe I am sick and everybody else is normal:-laf:-laf:-laf:-laf.

Our population has skyrocketed in the last 3+ decades. Where I once hunted marmots, in the Summer, there is just no way not to see hikers and climbers.

With all that foot traffic, I imagine there are always buried piles of human refuse in just about any drainage. That adds to the Giardia, Crypto- and other critters in the water that may be extremely harmful to your health!

Around here, we also have heavy metals in the water. When you see , what looks like a beaver pond that has the color of a Copper Sulfate Solution (clear green)? You definitely dont get your water from that drainage. Another is a clear red with irridescent colors around the edge. There aint no filter in the world that will clean up that poison swill! You might as well take a cyanide capsule! It would be less painful of a death! GregH

This filter is supposed to be one of the better ones (supposed to be) I think that where the water is taken is of more concern than what the filter will take out. If I know that we will be stopping to camp in a short time Greg you have seen the Google Maps water is in abundance in the BOB. It wouldn't be hard to get the water as high in the source and then bring it back and BOIL THE CRAP OUT OF IT let it cool and then run it thu the filter. John the Forest Service. guy spends many days in the forest each spring summer fall and only uses iodine and a filter. Ive been sick in 3rd world countries and dont want to take a chance.

Yeah BUDDY on the sick in third World Countries.

I had dysentery, within a month of being incountry, back in 1967! You talk about a big issue when you got stomach cramps and you gotta go so bad and cant see yer hand in front of your face and everything else is red MUD! Cant tell if its mud or crap, all over ya!:-laf, 'Cept fer the smell. Course, both were bad:-laf!

Got sick in VN also Greg. Went about a week in the bush and couldn't take it any more. Jumped in a Helli and took my into the Doc. He asked if I ate downtown. Of course I did but it was in a nice Bangkok Restaurant on RR. He started to lube up a plastic hose. I told him that I cant take that down my neck its all messed up from throwing up. He said no problem :-laf and then at the tender age of 19 it dawned on me why he was laughing. At this point I DIDNT CARE. He said im going to put this in you figured it out and put this red stuff in what looked like a plastic milk jug of today. And when the hose is removed YOU WILL HAVE TO GO NOW!!!!! BUT YOU CANT until it does it's job in killing all the bad stuff in your stomach. I stood there bent over a gurney and he put what felt like 50 ft of 5/8in garden hose with the nozzle end still attached and said here it goes. He shot the red stuff in and it felt like I had drank BATTERY ACID. He pulled out the hose and he wasn't kidding I HAD TO GO like never before. I broke out in a sweat and shaking a few min. later a med assistant came in with a mop and bucket and what looked like a scuba suit. I yelled occupied he said ya I know I have to clean up in here in just a second. I gave him a weird look and he said ARE YOU GOING TO BE ABLE TO CONTROL FROM STANDING TO SITTING?????????? Doc came in and said let er rip I just looked at the orderly and said im sorry. IT LOOKED LIKE A MURDER HAD BEEN COMMITED IN THAT ROOM WHEN I WAS DONE RED STUFF EVERY PLACE. Never again did I eat down town

OH, hey, I didn't realize, that's the same one I have, only my bag and plastic filter holder is all red and black. It uses the same cartridge filter... . I haven't used mine much, but it makes the old Gypsum water taste a lot better out of the river... . I haven't tried it on the Salt Fork of the Brazos, yet... . not sure if I will, if I can avoid it!! I also have some of those personal sized straw filters. I like those, as I can stash easily on my saddle, and then I can get water out of just about any water trough when I REALLY have to have a drink!! I use this one pretty regular during the summer... .
