Hey guys. My dad isnt to crazy about the idea of me doing this and he wants me to go pay to have it done. But from what i hear it is easy. Can somone post a step by step way to do it so i can show my dad... ... I still live in his house so i still have to listen to what he says. :(

Step one,

Move out..... :D Just kidding.

! cut exhaust just behind crossmember with sawsall.

unbolt exhaust from turbo flange.

remove all existing exhaust parts.

install downpipe on turbo.

start from downpipe and go to the rear of the truck.

put muffler in as far back as possible.

tell dad not to worrie that it only takes about 2 hours. after that he can call the fire department.

Good luck and have fun.

Get the 5" Kid... . :D

As long as your replacing everything it really easy - as long as you don't mind getting filthy and your neighbors aren't terribly religious.

XCX - I dont think it's that hard. Have you actually looked at the stock exhaust? Should just require you to cut the stock exhaust and bolt the new one up with some sockets...

Greg you may be right. For a long time I was thinking 4" was the way to go, but with some of the boxes and injectors out/coming out, I dont think that 500HP 5" requirement will be that hard to make!

I didn't see it in anyone's directions to start the engine up after you make the first cut in the downpipe.

I don't care what I'm working on - if I'm doing exhaust... I run it without any noise cancelling devices just to enjoy the sweet sounds! :-laf

Sound immature?... maybe even a bit 'Redneck'? Yup... but that's the way I've always done it and will continue doing it until I die.

All excellent advice of course. . The only thing I'd add is I like to lay out the new exhaust along the side of the truck in the right order, so it's obvious what piece is next.

To remove the old it truly is only 2 bolts (on the turbo outlet). The rest is just rubber hangers that you have to pry the exhaust hangers out of. Some spray on silicone (any NAPA or parts place carries it) can make installing the new hangers a snap as well.

Borrow a sawzall with a metal blade if you don't own one already. . It'll go through the stock exhaust like butter. Be prepared to get soot on yourself and on the ground. If you're doing it in his garage I'd put cardboard or something down first.

Oh, and just hand tighten the new bolts at first. . Once the entire new exhaust is in, then tighten them down with a wrench.

A jackstand with a cloth or rag over the top of it (so you don't scratch up the new exhaust) may be handy in holding pipes in place.

UPDATE

I would have loved to do it myself but my dad insistid that i dont. His buddy who is going to change my oil and has a lift for it is going to do it for free. I would have liked to do it myself so i could have learned but i will just watch him. .

Thanks to all that tryed to help out. I appreciate it

He won't even let you change your own oil!!! You might live in his house, but if you're paying for the truck... .

Sorry dude. Wrenching on my car and truck are part of the joy of ownership. (Not to mention my single income supports myself, my wife and my little girl so having someone else do it is like taking money out of their pocket. )

hey holeshot:

when the 4" exhaust goes on mine, the truck will definately be "tested" with the front pipe only. :D :D :D

them crimp clamps are darn tight eh... the pipes are crimped enough to make it a pita to remove the parts [i tried when i was going to gut the stock muffler, but the crimps won round 1... :(]

Jim: I lost a good friend of the family about 2 years ago. He used to get in all sorts of trouble at the Chrysler dealership back in the late 60's/early 70's for running customer's cars without exhaust.

In his honor, I have run darn near every type of engine without exhaust. I even ran my '94 6BT with just the exhaust manifold flipped upside down (working on the twins... . )... . it was LOUD and PROUD. It sounded mean... and rather nasty at the same time... talk about smoke! I had to drive with the hood open in the driveway... . was worried that I'd blister the paint from the hot exhaust... . :-laf

Nick - did you try using a 'hot wrench'? Best darn liquid wrench ever made... . nevermind the snake oils.

Matt

This is how I did it

and it cost less than order a kit and doing in myself.

1) Drive to local performance muffler shop

2) Tell them you what you want

3) Agree on price

4) Watch them install new exhaust

5) Pay bill

6) Drive away with a grin on your face

It took a total of 45 minutes.

No it has nothing to do with money, saving time, helping out a friend, nothing... . if you don't work on your own truck then you won't get IT. You have seen signs saying"it's a jeep thing"... . well this is the same thing.

People that just take there truck in to have the oil changed (like. who couldn't change the dam stuff), take it the dealer everytime it makes a burp or hiss, have someone else install your add-ons... . all of these and many more... ... you guy's will never get IT, never, never, never... ... ... ... ...

Listen kid, your truck is like your girl. You wouldn't ask a friend to... ... ... ... . Never mind, I guess you are too young to understand. ;)

Call me crazy, (some do  ) but even if the muffler shop was offering free installation, I would still do it myself. I HATE having anybody do anything I can do myself.
