About once a winter I seem to have engine trouble climbing a pass in cold weather. I'll be cruising along doing 65 up a steep grade at 10,000' and the truck starts to sputter, lose power and up comes the check engine light. An unexpected shift seemed to be the first hint, but I think the shift was caused by loss of power.

In previous years I've had to stop and for lack of any other ideas drain off the fuel filter. Restart and limp home, returning to normal over the next few miles.

Yesterday, it recovered by revving it in neutral and resuming, with full pwer gradually returning.

Always has the P0700 or transmission code when I check it later.

Other constants: Damn near the exact same spot on Eisenhower pass 3 different times, but this is a pass I've climbed dozens of times with no problems.

Only happens when my brother visits from Boston; he must think my truck is a POS.

Every time has been after sitting for several days idle up in the high country, with half a tank of fuel.

Previous events happened in the single or negative digits; yesterday it was mid 20's.

This one happened on a very fresh fuel filter, the other times on more used ones.

The engine light goes away in a few days and all seems normal.

Is this just bad fuel, or something more sinister?
