I am a new member to this site. I have a 1989 cummins motor non intercooled and would like to intercool it i realize the air intake is different i might have to make one. Is intercoolers still available or can i use one from a differnt application? Many thanks in advance

If you only have the motor, you are going to be doing a fair amount of cut and fit anyway for a transplant to some other vehicle. Certainly you can intercool it. There are some minor changes you will want to make to the timing etc when you do this. Essentially whatever will fit will work but you want something that is big enough to not simply choke the air flow. Bigger is better. All the parts you need are available from salvage. Lot of these trucks are dying from a number of aflictions. If the application is Dodge, you will need the core support to mount the intercooler and the grill parts to make room in front of the radiator. Definitely been done.

My 89 motor is in a chevy suburban. I turned up the fuel and will be putting

a hx35 with injectors soon. If i make a custon intake horn say 3 or 4 inches in diameter and add a big old honken KN Air filter as i have plenty of room in the engine compartment i am hoping that i will not need an intercooler but my gut feeling is i will this is why i am asking you guys seem very knowledgable and i am just begining. I want to install a pyro guage to moniter egt's where on the exhaust maniflod do i need to install the probe?

should i just het one of ats 3 exhaust units? Sorry for so many questions. I also have a 91 non intercoolen truck i am thinking of doing the same to. Oo.

Thanks Chris

My 90 model has a Banks intercooler. You might want to check there web sight to see if there still available.

I called banks and they stopped production on all of their first gen. stuff. It looks like i am on my own tofind parts either off of a 91. 5-93 truck i have been looking but no luck. Does any one know any one with parts available? Will a intake horn off of a 2nd gen work with my motor? Is their setup the same as ours ? Oo.

Thanks Chris

Where are YOU located. I am in Georgia. I have all you need but am not interested in shipping. Core support, tubes, horn, connecters, intercooler.

I will be away from the computer for two or three days.

The intake horn is turned a bit different on the 2nd gen setup but I believe it will bolt on. The IC, hump hoses, tubing is all available from different vendors. Check with Piers Diesel Research and I believe they can set you up with the pieces. The other option is find the pieces off a first gen and transplant them as James says. Get ready for a little sticker shock on new pieces though, the IC and hoses are a bit spendy. :)

I would do the following.

Use the three inch horn Cummins # 3918685 $37

Clamp for horn is # 3923060 (sorry it's now 3069053) $27

O ring between the two # 3919852 $18

Make the pipe 3" as well. Use exhaust tube. You'll need a straight section, a short radius AND long radius 90° and also a 45° pipe. I purchased my pipe from a local OTR trucking dealership. The pipe is cheap. If you go to NAPA it's twice the cost.

The boost hose is silicon 3" hose. You'll need calamps for the hose. Four sections of hose about five inches long. Again the OTR truck dealer will sell you a stick of bulk hose that you cut. Or PDR in Canada eh will sell you the hose as well, that you cut.

The IC is either a second gen cooler or some guys use the Ford Powersmoke cooler. Dave Swank installed one from the Ford and you may ask him the price and deatils of install. He has pics in the readers rig gallery.
