VP44 Replacement

Do a search on this forum on VP44 replacement there is plenty of information.

In issue #51 of the TDR mag there is how to replace the VP44 on page 96 with pics.

Hope this helps

Don't buy a gear puller, make one. 3/8" steel plate cut in a circle about 2" or so with two holes drilled in it to fit the two tapped holes in gear. Put two metric bolts through holes into gear and snug down alternately, gear pops right off.

Like they said, Its not that bad. Just use common sence. If you make your own puller use grade 8 bolts and make sure they fully engage the threads in the gear.

If you don't have any good flarenut wrenches, Craftsman Profesional Set is affordable and you'll use them all the time after this job so get some. Use them on the Injector lines at the pump and Cyl #5&6. Last thing you want to do is round over any of those nuts.

Prime the pump well before you start cranking away. Top prime your filter element if possible and try to get fuel out of the relief valve just in front of the fuel inlet. Crack that when you prime, if you have a good flow there you can move on to the inj. lines.

Have fun.

Would a steering wheel puller work instead of a gear puller?

You would have to make sure it is narrow enough to fit inside the access hole in the front cover then I would say yes.

Good luck.

If your lucky and it doesn't go to deep. 2 places for it to go it will land on gear train below or it will go all the way down and fall into oil pan.

We tried and tried and couldnt, all it took was someone who just stopped by and wasnt involved to stab in and get it with one try!!! I guess since he wasnt as frustrated it worked out.

While doing the IP, worth doing the KDP fix? Seems it would just be a cover away...

Oh YEA, the @$@#$@#$@#%#$ do. Dang nab it... errrrr...

LP, KDP, DC sucks on warranty. . fuel $3/gallon. ,,,, Ok, steam blown off now. .

I know one guy with a 98. 5 24v, went in and found the KDP 1/2 hanging out.

After the subject made it's arounds on here, I remember coming away with the impression I have it on my 99, no doubt. Believe I've read others in 99 and 00 found it 1/2 out too.

For a while a kit was getting passed around by the members that had a fixture to drill the front cover in the right spot and add a retainer.

I -think- that Cummins had phased in a fix , via the cover, but somewhere around the 00 or 01 it made a spotty appearance. I think 02's should be completely safe.

My buddy has an 01, and I also seem to remember feeling he has a 1/2 and 1/2 chance.

My memory is very faint on the phase in year for the Cummins new cover.

EDIT. .

Just searching it seems from newer comments on the forum here. . late 99 Cummins made the change. . so it's the very late 99's and early 00's that are 50/50. . into 01 and newer should be fine.

(mines a Spring 99. . so 99% sure I got a KDP. .

Who's got the JIG and tool set now?)
