Hello guys!

Is the 8-900 cold crankin amps of the Red top Optima enough to start my cummins in cold weather?

The reason I ask, is because I´m thinking to expand the washer tank to function as a combined washer tank/water-methanol for a wat-met injection system as ex. Snow performance. .

I'd get Group 31 no matter the brand. Personally the Odyssey batteries are "better" in my opinion and can go up to either 1700 amps or 2100 amps in a single battery that is like 7"x7"x13". Even their smaller sizes have enormous power levels. And they deep cycle and regular cycle at the same time. No need to compromise.

Thats what I wanna get.

Click on either of those for info and print outs. Looks like batteries plus and some other places carry them as John mentioned.

If you get the big 2100 monster... you'll need the SAE post adapters. If you get the 1700 (recommended) it has them already and they are drilled and tapped for 3/8" bolt for accessories if need be. Plus you can get them full metal jacketed in case someone is shooting at you on the run :D

Just remember... your stock battery poly tray can hold a 12" battery maybe. The 1700 Odyssey Group 31 is 13". Thus you will have to figure on a mounting method for that long of a battery. There is room... just not with the stock tray.

Do you think you'll need TWO of those? Seems like just one has more juice than the 2 I have. I would be interested in a buy if I could eliminate one of the 50 lb bricks I have hanging out behind my front bumper.

RE Odyssey batterys

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ok,

I will fine out the details and get a price for them and pm you all Ok

The batterys are a bit pricey Just to give you fare warning

But they are worth every penny

JPittinger,

("I could eliminate one of the 50 lb bricks I have hanging out behind my front bumper. ") Yes you can eliminate one of your 50 lb bricks. Mr Bob did this already with one of there used ones and it is a PC1700 that is 1700 amps at start up and is working fine, even in the snow. The PC2150 is 2150 amps at start up.

Thanks

David

Here is some reading on the batteries in question. Take the time to look at it before spending the $$$.

Not so sure these batteries will last a long time under our Hoods. It gets HOT under there and these batteries do not like that at all.

Plenty of folks have gone down to just one battery, even with the stock setup. You don't need them both just for starting.

It's the grid heaters that kill the batteries, and THEY are the reason for having duals.

BTW-- the Odyssey batteries are fantastic. We use them in our Humvees, and they are about the best you'll ever find. Not cheap, though!

Justin

I have only one of the 1700. I live in Snow country and the way I get around the heaters is they run until the engine is up to 70 deg then off. I have the heater savers from practical solutions and once in a while during the winter, I put the battery on a trickle just to make sure it is all the way up but I have had no problems starting with one battery in 0 degree weather with the heaters running one cycle. .
