8.3C and Speedo Problems..........

I was changing out the rear axle seal (and ruined brakes!!). . on my '98 and got to thinking. . why is it that when gear oil leaks on to brakes it causes them to lock up (that was the problem that led me to the oil seal), but when gear oil leaks on to a clutch (like from a transmission front seal) ... it slips??? Bob

different oil, different friction materal. not really sure. but a clutch you don't want to slip, and the brakes you do want to slip. kinda makes sense in a weird way when you get them contaminated. they do assbackwards to what they should do eh...

The oil makes the shoes swell, thus there is no clearance between the shoe and the drum, instant lockup when you touch the pedal. Clutch on the other hand, doesn't swell, just carries oil in the top layers of material and doesn't allow the clutch facing to touch flywheel, just the oil...
