Whats Up With This ?

I haven't drove my truck in about 2 month due to an illness, well I went out today just to look around under the hood and my oil filter looks like someone dropped an M80 in it. It is all blown out,not broke and not leaking, but very swollen, expanded, well I took it off and there wasn't any water in it just 3/4 full with Amsoil oil, kinda dirty but nothing unusual at all.

So I filled a new filter and put it on and started her up with no problems, runs great:)

Any ideas:rolleyes:

Never heard of such a thing, what, would cause the oil filter to expand in the first place? I wonder what would have happend if it had to sit any longer.

Dave,

I think you should mail it back to Geno's!

I'm guessing it probably happened on a VERY

cold start one morning and you never noticed it till now.

Yes your right Steve,I forgot,I got some filters from Genos and some from Amsoil, this was an Amsoil filter,NOT from Genos.

Sorry for the mixup.

I had bought the filter kit from Genos, that is why I thought it was from Genos.

I am trying to remember who drove it last, might have been my wife, but she knows how to let it warm up and stuff.

A friend of mine is going to help me drain the oil in the morning and see what comes out,I will try and get a pic of it and post it. .

We drained the oil and saw nothing but oil,I just changed the oil and am going to drive it for a while and see what happens:(

Wall thickness of aftermarket filters!!!

In one of the threads, about 5-6 months ago, someone had a quote from Cummins about the burst pressure needed to be higher because of the pressure relief valve. Some of the filters reviewed a couple of TDR's ago did not live up to the criteria. I have no idea where Amsoil was on that list. I am NOT bashing Amsoil. Don't even go there. The only reason for mentioning it, is that this is the first post I have seen here someone complained of a "swelled" filter.

Yes I know were you are coming from,I remember this,I think I have used more Amsoil filters than the Fleetguard with no problems with either one,I called Amsoil and they said to send it back to them and they will send me a new one,but I need to know what caused this,I have a Fleetguard on it now. I think Dodge recommends the Fleetguard so I will stick to that one filter for a while:)

I had a friend with a Ford that used to do that - to the point of exploding the filters.

It turns out that the pressure relief valve in the oil pump was sticking.

I'm not suggesting that's the case here, but it's something to think about.

One of the features of the Amsoil filters is a thicker than normal material.

How long have you had this filter? What is the part #?

Did you collect an oil sample?

No I never have done an oil analysis, but I have been running it for about a week now and it seems my oil pressure is not what it use to be,it seems about 3 lbs lower than usuall. I am not sure why and it runs great, and I havent had any problems since.
