Recently made a trip from my home here in north central Missouri to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, OH. Great trip, my 2001 HO 6spd ran like a pro with two exceptions.

I was passing through Akron with the cruise set about 70mph. Truck had been running tops all the way... . around 20mpg, never missed. Driving along and the cruise kicks out and the pickup goes to idle. Steady and regular idle, but the accelerator pedal is dead and the little engine light is on. I say a few choice words (1000 miles from home!) and shut the pick up off. Wait a few minutes, start back up, and other than the light being on, everything is peachy. Pedal is responsive, start right back on my merry way. Still over half a tank of fuel.

Stop for the night, get up the next morning and the light is still on. Run over to Wal-Mart next to the hotel, come back out (truck off) and the light stays off when I start back up again.

Did it to me once on the way home as well. Same situation. Stopped, shut down, started up and away I went. The only thing that I noticed was when I went to fuel I got a lot of pressure when I unscrewed the cap. When it did it the second time, I popped the fuel cap and had a tremendous release of pressure.

Is this the cause? What can I do about it or do I need to look elsewhere? Confused as heck, but the pickup hasn't died once. Even when the pedal is dead, it idles perfect. I would really appreciate some ideas.

Thanks!

On Edit: I looked and have two codes: P1693 (which is always there) and P0121 (throttle position sensor??)

Edit again: I did recently have the lift pump replaced. Been about 2000 miles ago.

The fuel tank on a model year 2001 Cummins/Ram is vented to the atmosphere (unlike gasoline-powered Rams) through the rollover valve on top of the fuel tank. A check valve within the rollover valve closes in case of accidental rollover. You should not see any pressure release when the filler cap is removed.

The dead pedal sounds like the APPS.

I have been reading some, and is the reset something that can work? Or should I just replace the sensor?

New fuel cap maybe?

I can't help you with the accelerator pedal position sensor.

The fuel tank cap has nothing to do with tank-venting through the rollover valve on your Cummins/Ram.
