Just curious to know if its possible to powder coat stainless steel. I want to buy a grill insert for my ford excursion and its stainless, but I want in black. Its either paint or powder coat...

Thanks,

John

I have never had good luck with powder coated products. Are some better than others? Is it all in the way it's done? Everything I've ever owned that's powder coated has rusted.

Any material that will accept an electrical charge or conduct electrical current can be powdercoated.

Actually, they've developed the technology to finish heat sensitive substrates, so powdercoating can now be done on materials that before were never thought possible. Like plastic, wood, and stone.

I have not had anyting powder coated but I have a buddy that has had a whole bunch of stuff and another with a powercoated airplane frame. It all has to do with how good of work the coater does. I think mass produced powder coatings (like nerf bars and grill guards) don't get the quality control done to then to make them last. My buddies plane frame looks brand new after 7 years.
