Hi folks. I'm new at this so please bear with. I have a 98. 5 24v auto 4x4 and when I take off slowly with little on no throttle, the transmission seems to hunt between 1st and 2nd, back and forth. When I give it some fuel the bug goes away. No problem with the TC at high speed or under load. If I pull the shifter into 1st, the transmissions stays in 1st and seems to work fine. My father-in-law has the same problem on his rig, which is identical to mine, but 2wd.

Any ideas?

I experienced that exact problem after adjusting the line pressure higher on the valve body. Why did I adjust the line pressure higher? Because the TCC was slipping at part throttle 4th gear lockup. Why did it start slipping? Because I installed a Power Edge EZ. Why did I install a Power Edge EZ? Because I needed more power. This is how you catch the BOMBing bug.

These rigs are notorious for electrically noisy TPS/APPS signals. That may be the problem, or perhaps the previous owner increased the line pressue, or could be the transmission throttle valve cable adjustment.

Do yourself/wallet a favor and call Bill or Stephen at DTT about your hunt. It could be one of the reasons listed above or some internal leakage. Either way it's bad and your transmission is not happy with you. The call is free and the advice is well worth your time. There are other transmission shops out there, I only recommend DTT because I just had this conversation with them last week so I know they are up on this. Good Luck. DTT 1-866-504-4002
