Just moved up from 1999 to 2001 (50K miles) Ram 2500, 2wd, auto w/3:54. I always heard the 99 pump when starting up but not the 01. Fuel guage is off by 1/4 tank and ran out of fuel recently. When bleeding injectors I had to crank engine to displace air. I can hear a relay click when turning on the key but that's it. Does the 01 pump run as long at the 99 and is it located under the hood.

Fuel pump and Tank levl

Sounds like the 01's may have the same issues the 99's did. Check to insure that your lift pump is working... sound's like it's not. I know the lift pumps on the 99's had a plastic connector fastening the drive to the impeller in them. When mine failed, I wanted to see why. Documented bad design.

Second, I had problems with fuel level indications too in my 99. Dodge had problems with the sending units in the tanks... another documented bad design.

And... of coarse... no recall to fix a bad design!

My LP ran for a while on an engine start bump until I used the Smarty. The Smarty re-loads the newest ECM software that Marco knew about. My understanding is that DC did this to allow after market fuel forwarding systems like the FASS to work properly. The LP run feature is one thing that I lost in the processs.

This might be your only problem. At any rate good luck. :)
