I changed my fuel filter a minute a go, and of course I'm on my way to work. When I turned on the ignition to run position, I noticed I could not hear the lift pump run. Now I'm not sure if I could in the first place. A moment of confusion, complicated by doubt and fear of high repair bills. I have had a consistent 1693 code for a couple weeks now and when it goes away it comes back on next start-up.

1. Should I be able to hear the pump prior to start-up? I can't remember.

2. Is it possible to use an external lift-pump instead of replacing the in-tank pump and filter unit? (400 bucks plus for the part!) If so, does anyone have a kit or good instructions and part numbers?

I did this on my Honda Civic. . . uh. . umm, er good grief 20 years ago. How time flies.

Gotta get to work. Thanks for the help guys.

You should here the lift pump kick on before start up. If you don't, try just bumping the starter just enough to engage it to the flywheel but not start the truck. With the ignition still in the run location, you should here the lift pump and it should keep running for about a minute or so. If not, there are a few possibilities.

1. Lift pump is bad.

2. Ecm is not sending out command to turn lift pump on.

3. Bad fuse or wiring

Get some help, and unplug the lift pump from the harness. You'll find it under and behind the fuel filter. Using a test light with a piece of stripped wire in the clamp, insert the wire into one prong and the test light into the other prong and have someone roll the ignition to run. You should have a light. If not, bump the starter. If you still have no light, ECM or wiring problem. If you have a light, bad pump.

FASS makes a great pump kit for your truck. I just went through all this with my buddies 2000 and we installed the pump kit ($389) in about 2 hours, kinda taking our time. Very easy, very clean kit. I'm getting one for my 03 soon. Makes a little bit of noise at idle, but under power on the freeway or in town, not even noticeable. Make sure you get the 95gph, you don't need the 120gph. Sorry for the long post. Good luck!

You don't have an In-tank fuel pump. Your "lift" pump or "transfer" pump is located on the drivers side of the engine, towards the rear and just below the fuel filter housing. Follow "Diesel Nut"'s directions.

Got it done...

I checked out the ECM and it was sending power to the Lift pump. I looked at the FASS pumps but could not find any info and pricing on just the pump without the filter system  . Also, considering I've already put about a thousand miles on my truck without a lift pump, and the fact that I cannot be without transportation (70 mile work commute) I had to just put in an OEM pump. Don't have the luxury of waiting for the mail. I got it for $325 at my dealer. A rediculously expensive pump.

But, it is working well, and the Newf Limo is purring like always so what the heck. I appreciate the quick response and help.

Thanks guys,

Dennis

I would find a NEW DEALER if I were you..... The lift pump, newest part # only cost $160!!!!!!!!!! I just bought one for a buddy's truck a week ago.

Good Luck

Are you sure we are talking about the same part?!?!? List was supposedly $342! Maybe you are able to get it wholesale? Something most of us unlucky schmucks aren't able to do.

PN. 5080885AA Lift Pump for 2001 ETC 5. 9L Cummins.

Do Tell!

you can get the same parts at cummins for alot less money. Lift pumps are normally 150ish

huskdorff diesel runs specials too

I hate to put salt on the wound, but I paid $389 for the FASS pump, no filter and I'm pretty confident it won't every need to be replaced. Now you know for next time. I've heard of trucks eating 2 lift pumps a year. One guy on TDR had replaced like 5 or so under warranty. Alot of companied sell the FASS. I got my buddies from TST.

Yup, I'll be well armed for next time. Once I figured out what the problem was I realized how long I'd been driving without a lift pump, so it was more of a "I gotta' get something in there NOW!" situation. It would have been an extra week and 4-500 miles, and I would have been stressing the whole time. Thanks for the info.
