I know that there have been posts on this before, but I'll ask again. What is a good brand of car/truck wax to use on the Dodge? I'd like to be able to get it at a nationwide chain store like NAPA, AutoZone, Walmart, Etc. A product that would also work on the fiberglass on the new 5er would be best.

I'm also thinking about getting an electric buffer to make the job easier. Any ideas on one? I am thinking about Sears or Home Depot. Not looking for an expensive professional one, just something that will work well, but used only a few times a year.

Thanks

Ken

I just recently went through the buffer dilema myself. https://www.turbodieselregister.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=5988&highlight=buffer

If I remember correctly the less expensive buffers all spun too fast for my liking.

As far as wax/polish goes, I prefer the 3M products. You can get them at NAPA. I have had great luck using these products so far and they offer a wide selection of products to suit your individual paint needs.

A friend of mine details cars at a rather large paint shop, and after all the products they have tried they have found the 3M products to work the best.

I have had the Best luck and performance from... .

McGuires (SP) products...

I use either the "Yellow Wax Liquid" or their "#26 liquid" formulation

I prefer the #26 for ease of use. . (Comes off no prob even if baking in the sun)

"Yellow Wax" is harder to remove but gives a deeper "Glow".

I use a buffer that cost me about 70. 00 and buy a new terricloth bonnet every spring.

I've heard "Mother's" makes good products... but I have so much luck with McGuires that I won't change unless I try a sample that beats good ole #26.

Let's face it... . If it's easier to use. . you'll be more apt to do it more often... and that's the best way to protect your truck's finish I know of !

I can finish my truck (1998. 5 CC SWB 4X4) in about 1. 5 hours... .

Shorter if it's been done within the last 2 weeks.

I use Gliptone products on my truck. Wash and Glow is the soap, and then i use there Caranuba wax on the rims, and Teflon wax on the truck. I wax it every 3 or 4 months. In the meantime, everytime i wash it, i spray it down with Gliptones "Speed wax" which makes the wax last alot longer too. Bird droppings and doad dirt come right off with wter, no rubbing.

I use Protect All (1-800-322-4491) on everything I own , don't even use "waxes" any more, this stuff is so easy to use. It was originally reccomended to me for use on boats (fiberglass) but the bottle says to use on any vehicle, so I did and am glad!!!! I would not really call it a wax, more of a "protectant". If you have a dull finish, it will not make it shine, but if you have a nice shiny finish, it will keep it that way, and easily. With a dull finish, you will have to use other polishes, cleaners, etc. , to make it shine, but then you can keep it up with Protect All. My '99 ram has never been "waxed" just Protec All, and it looks GOOD! I have a 1989 24 foot enclsed car trailer thats sits outside all the time, it looks like it is perhaps 1 year old (that's because I did not discover Protect All untill '92!) It takes me one hour, once a month to do the trailer. Don't like to let it go much longer than a month, it will wear off at about 5-6 weeks, and then gets harder/takes longer to do. My '92 boat, 9 years old, looks perhaps 1 month old, never been waxed, just Prorect All, takes about 50 minutes to do, (yes I do the entire uderneath of the hull also!!!!!), Ram takes about 25 pleasurable mintes to do. After about 6-8 applications, this stuff really builds up a shine, and gets noticed. I have a 1980 Dodge (what else?) Diplomat beater with 325,000+ miles on it, have been using Protect All on it (since '92, takes 20 minutes) and was recently asked if I had the car painted? (no)!! Have an original paint '71 Cuda, and would not dream of using a "wax" on it, the paint is so thin from too much waxing in previous years, it gets Protect All only. Suffice to say, I really like the stuff, just wipe it on, wipe it off, it replaces several other products, and I use it around the house also, use on my wood gunstocks, almost everything I own.

I have been buying it from Camping World (www.campingworld.com) for about $34 per gallon, get nearly a year (10 months anyway) out of a gallon, with 6 vehicles, boat and car trailer. Good Stuff!!

My father has been using Protect All on his class A motorhome for quite a while and he is very happy with it.

I think I seen some at Wally World (Walmart) if anybody is interested.

I use Turtle Wax in the paste. It goes on OK, comes off like a bear, but it does a good job of protection. I have used it since the 70s, guess I am too old to change now.

Klasse Acyrlic

I recentlt was pursuing something that would hopefully fix my dull clearcoat, and someone recommended trying Klasse products. It is an acrylic, not a wax, and is supposed to hold up longer than wax. I got some and was very impressed with the results. It looks as though the truck has been color sanded. And unlike the Mcguires products I had been using before (and mind you, was happy with), this seems to keep that "just been waxed" look far better. It's been on about a month now, and it still beads water and dirt off it better than any wax I've seen. The stuff isn't cheap, but IMHO well worth it. Do a search in Yahoo shopping for Klasse Acyrlic, they can be ordered there.

I also use Protect All on my '93 Ram and my '94 Dutchmen TT and get more than a few comments on how good the truck looks. It is the easiest product to use that I have found to date. To keep my '93 looking good between applications (twice a year) I wash it with Eagle One car wash. The combination is hard to beat.

Happy Trails

It looks like the polisher that I need is one like this: Makita 9227C, which sells for just under $200 from Amazon.com. I think I'll have to wait for that one. Thanks for all the feedback.

TR3 Resin Glaze

Had a good test for wax the other day. I was loading a mechanical lift into my truck, and proceeded to scratch the heck out of my paint  . So I put a little Turtle wax on to try to buff it out. It only gave me a green colored scratch(my truck is white). So I grabbed some TR3 Resin glaze, wiped it on right over the other wax and let it dry on for an hour. Buffed out the entire scratch, I cant even see it anymore without looking REAL hard. I'm sold on this stuff. Only 6 bucks for a pint. !:)

Buffer

Ken,have you looked at the buffers pushed by Griot's Garage and

Meguir's Wax?They look close to the same . I been thinking about one of them.

BTW. . I have used Griot's wax products and like them. I am now using Meguir's professional products and they appear to be about the same. FWIW.

Ditto on the Klasse. A couple of years ago I did an extensive search on auto finishes. I was trying to find a product I had used in the early 80's but couldn't find (it was a good product). Someone at work brought me a couple of samples of Klasse. After trying it, decided to stick with it. It's easy to apply. Two flavors. All-In-One is for oxidized paint and Glaze is for paint that already looks good. All-In-One would probably work well with a polisher such as the PorterCable. The glaze doesn't need it. The effort is minimal, the results are gorgeous. Don't forget to clay. Smoooooooth...

Consumer Reports had an article on waxes (May 00?) I chose Zymol for best shine, least abrasive, long lasting ease of use etc. Found the paste wax hard to use and greasy looking when finished, but the liquid is easy to use gives a great shine and almost no film residue, and prety cheap, $12 at Auto Zone.

Zaino Brother's!

Well, I have been experimenting with different car waxes/polishes for about 16 years now. Tried all the various Turtle Waxes, Meguiars products, TR3, Nu Finish, etc. . and then someone on a Mustang related site recommended www.zainobros.com Zaino Brothers polishes. As far as my own experiences go, there isn't anything I've ever used that can really compare to their stuff. I haven't used Zymol or Klasse, Liquid Glass or the Protect All, so I can't compare these to the Zaino stuff, but I really like the Zaino products.

YMMV,

Tom

I was going to suggest Zaino Bros. too. I just invested in their product because of past threads on the subject. Just haven't had time to do it yet... ...

I dont like mothers at all. I just got their kit with the bar and the wax and it collects dust. I only use Zymol. It came out nicer than using the clay bar. Smooth as glass.
