Engine Assembly Lube?

carbon tetrachloride WAS the solvent of choice until it was found to cause all sorts of nasty disorders in almost human people.

Not finished yet & the black crap was HARD AS ROCK, said to soak for 2 hours that didn't do much so I left it overnight it said that it could cause it to discolor WHO CARES as long as its clean

Some of us are old enough to remember using a bucket of carb cleaner with a mesh basket designed for overnight soaking. I haven’t seen one since I left the gas station where I worked during high school , but I could tell you if there was one in the room simply by the smell. Not a bad odor, just unforgettable.

My auto zone has a gallon size right at the floor level where all the aerosols are. It might even have a basket. Never looked.

Amen to that.

This one has a basket. I've used another quite some time ago from "Mckays carb Cleaner" with great success. Either its no longer in business or the EPA has banned it.

I probably wouldn't leave anything soaking in it....but there is a Commercial cleaner called "carbon- off" that'll remove anything. I use it to clean chimney caps, among other things.

You can see in the before pic's that some moron had painted the motor, carb included to clean it up. this stuff took that off in big globs of goo

We use to use the "carbon tetrachloride" to clean everything from INK stains to grease stains on our dress shirts when we were in the shop. Best cleaner ever invented worked better than the dry cleaners. I haven't found anything that cleaned that good since this was removed by big brother.
I can still remember all of the small bottles that were squired away so, we could use this later. That was over 50 years ago am I am still here.

Military had Carbon Tech in a washer that spun parts around and heated. talk about CLEAN!!

We used MEK and TCE, room temp, no heaters (boom! factor:eek:). Right up there with carbon tetrachloride. Just don't clean certain types of plastic or have a spark/flame around MEK.

Are there any hot tanks available anymore, back in the 70's we'd put heads and carbs in a hot tank and let it go overnight. In the morning you'd pull up basket with very clean parts. EPA probable eliminated them from exsistance though.

Our Shop has a hot tank its the size of two double side by side refrigerators

My buddy runs an automotive machine shop. No “Hot Tank” as we know it. He has an oil fired oven with a rotisserie for cast iron and steel. Blocks, heads, cranks, etc. it uses steel shot to blast the parts clean of cooked debris. After cooking they go into a tumbler to remove the lions share of shot from where it’s hiding. After that it’s hand work checking every nook and crannie, oil galleys, etc. for left over blast media. He also uses an enclosed, automated, high pressure, spray washer for aluminum, tin work, and any steel that’s not in terrible condition. It uses hot water and a priority soap solution. I wouldn’t try to do a carb with the high pressure. Parts would disappear. What’s great about it is it’s far less labor intensive after the process. All he needs to do is immediately blow dry the parts and apply an anti corrosion spray of CRC. Flash rust will form before your eyes on bare cast.

Anyone try an ultrasonic cleaner on carbs? I just got one for gun stuff and bought a larger one hoping it would help with the old relics I like working on.

Still have boxes of Carter AVS, AFB, ThemoQuad, Holley, Rochester, all sitting in boxes waiting for the next project..
