Competition Have you spanked a Vette today?

Competition Triples anyone??

i was just wondering if anybody knows if schedule 40 grade, carbon steel steam pipe will hold up as a header. It has a wall thickness of . 145". Also has a recommended work pressure of 723psi@ 800degrees. and a melting point of 2800 degrees. A while ago someone made a header from schedule 80 pipe, but it has a smaller I. D. Any opinions would be helpful. Thanks. Jason...

the material would work but might possibly crack due to weight of the turbocharger, just my opinion

with 55pounds of turbo hanging off it, it'll have to have bracing to the block, for sure. If i run a brace to a bushing mounted on the engine block, will that allow the turbo to flex and the engine to flex seperately?

willyslover has it right---hufnpuf the turbo can flex with the motor but the intercooler pipe needs to flex and so does the exhaust--chris

The best materail would be 321L or 347L stainless steel. 321L is a grade of Titanium and 347L is Columbium. Kind of pricey I know, but you make it and forget it:D . These materails can take a lot of heat without excessive expanion(cracking). With these materails you have to TIG weld them and use a specail tectinque to weld them. Also,316L is a good chose and is used more and is less expensive. Also,a lot easier to weld. Carbon can be used but you need to stess releave the welded areas to prevent cracking. I know I will get some flake on that one,but it does help and we have been doing it for years in the boiler making industery. Just my two cents.
