Like a cargo trailer to bring tools, bikes, motorcycle, etc along. Anyone with experience or advice on sizes, prices, used market, etc?

Also very interested in hearing about single vs. dual axles. That seems like the first decision I have to make.

Don't know about the used trailers in your area, but in Phoenix, people seem to want as much for used as new. I bought a 20' enclosed Wells Cargo with tandem axles new for +/- $5,500. This was last summer. I have no complaints with it, and I loaded it down pretty good.

Try www.uhaul.com. When the equipment gets fully depreciated, they sell it off at surplus centers around the country. Yes, some of thier equipment is just plain worn out, but some good deals can be had. As rental units, the equipment is very heavy duty and prices seem very reasonable (about 1/2 of what used stuff is going for around here)

Good luck!

Being an ex-employee to that orange company I can say that they never sold used trailers. Trucks and other equipment was sold however.

Here is a quote from their web site "Please note: U-Haul does not sell trailers. "

Whoops! My mistake. I bought a tow-dolly from them and I assumed they sold everything. Does that mean old U-Haul trailers never die?

Sorry for the bad info.

Ted, I have an 18' Wells Cargo and a 21' Haulmark. The Haulmark is a much nicer trailer (as far as finish and accesories) than the Wells Cargo and cost less per foot. Just something to think about.

What model Haulmark do you have? I am looking at Haulmark 28' trailers but am undecided on what model. I like the low weight of the Thrifty Hauler but am concerned that it may be too weak. I will be hauling at full weight capacity.
Thanks, Larry

Larry, I have a Haulmark Edge. It is 5000lb empty. Add a car and aerodynamic load (it has no nose cone and I don't have a wing), it gets heavy. It is one of the nicest trailers I have seen short of the race trailers with the living quarters. It has a diamond plate floor, full interior florecent lighting, power jack, outside plug to run interior power, 5000lb winch, and other nice features. The Wells Cargo has a door on the side that has to be opened to open your car door so you can get out, The Haulmark does not have this door because it is wide enough to open the car door without it. All this and only a little more than the Wells Cargo.

I had a 28ft Haulmark race trailer and the beavertail broke on it. All it ever hauled was a 3400# car and a few parts. When that broke all of the outrigger welds broke wheelhouse bent destroyed all the side panels,Had to have it welded up on the side of the road. NOT CHEAP! Noticed a little smoke in the side mirror, was the tire rubbing on the wheelhouses. Got out and could not believe it. Looks like the mainrails were thin to me for a heavy trailer. It had about 30k miles on it. Do yourself a favor and weld a plate on the back and front of the beavertail welds and this will not happen. Maybe haulmark is doing this now I dont know. It was a good trailer till then. I am ordering a 26ft Pace Shadow, and I will check the beavertail welds on this one.

Thanks Jeff & 6bbl. I really only need 20" for my Rabbit dsl PU, 11'boat on top and a few drums of heating for those long trips to Baja. I will be towing it behind my 26' motorhome & figure I have already moved the air so I might as well go for all the space I can get. Those inflatable toys can take up alot of space #ad
By big concern is being blown arround.

TedKid,
We have 4 trailers that we use for business. Three are Wells Cargo, one is a Pace. The Wells are 12', 16' and 20' while the Pace is 14'. We have had lots of problems with the pace re: tires and axles. We are always replacing tires and bearings and had to have an axle replaced last year. We tend to overload the traiers and that is part of the problem but the Wells Cargo trailers have held up better. I feel some of the problem is related to the Torsion suspension that the Pace has and the heavey weights we haul. All the trailers have tandom axles and if you are going to haul more than a couple of thousand pounds that is the way you should go.

We have also been told by a tire man that when hauling heavy loads, the tires should be biased ply and not radial tires. The radials tend to flex at the side walls when on grooved pavement with heavy loads and this causes failures at the side walls. (this will probably get lots of feedback, I'm just telling what we were told!)

Hope this helps.

Thanks Stan (paccool).

I'll have a BMW K100RS +-700#, 2 mountain bikes, windsurfer, misc other belongings, can't imagine I'll get over 2,000#.

This is where I've gotten so far: Thinking 10 to 12 footer, single axle (Have a little push dolly for moving trailers into my back yard, duals won't cut it), electric brakes, side door, spare tire, electric vent, roof rack, possibly fold down bunk (double as shelves) or two. Like to get it 6' tall inside, but might not happen.

Hopefully used for about $1,000. Sound reasonable?

Ted,
Sounds about right but remember that pulling one several feet longer won't require much more power (you have lots anyway!) and will give a little more room. There are also several widths available. A side door is also good to have.

I'm a fan of tandom axles. This gives a safety cushion should you have a blowout.

If you want a very good trailer you might try a Hillsborough endura trailer. They are a extruded aluminum instead of steel and aluminum sheet. Much stronger and lighter. I have had mine for a year now and love it. I use it comercially and it is very strong. They should have a web page they are in Hillsbourogh Kansas.

I am a Fan of US Cargo. I have owned several of their trailers. I now have a 44ft living quarters trailer. It weighes about 15,000 with equipment and everything. I traveled to the factory in Bristol,IN. I saved over $10. 000 by doing a little driving(alot of driving-2500+ miles). It has 3 axles. I would not do with anything under 2 axles unless you want the ease of pushing it around by hand. I would also recommend 5200lb+ axles.

A quick update o the Pace trailer that we have. It is in the shop with axle problems and it looks like new axles will need to be installed. It seems that the manufacter did not standardize the lengths as they are telling us that they need to measure and have the new ones custom made to insure they will fit. At this point it may not be worth the expense

they let you buy at wholesale?

Regardless of the load weight, heavy or light give serious thought to a Wells Cargo, tandem axle with a nose cone. With tandem, even with a light load, side wind will not be as much a factor as with a single axle.
Wells will supply any highth you order, the lower the better, and the nose cone make it ride like a dream. We currently have a 16' Wells, interior 4' 6" good trailer.
