Playing on the anvil

Im going to build a carport over the concrete slab NOT attached to the garage "Free Standing" on the far side I can have several Vertical support poles because they won't be in the way to access the garage. The near side is where I want a clear span so incase I want to drive into the garage I can without poles obstructing the path. The clear span from almost touching the garage to the end of the slab is 36 ft the width of the slab is 27ft. All thats going on top to be supporting the roof is 2x4 roof trusses and some 3/4 in OSB plywood to attach the metal roof to.

At 36ft its a pretty decent distance to be spanning without sag. In the picture the run-in shed in the background they sistered 2x10 and a 2x6 to another 2x10 and 2x6 alternating the placement of the 2x6 from top to bottom on opposite sides. was wondering about your ideas ???

Id rather keep the roof pitch the same direction, in the link I would have drive in from the end of the carport. The main reason for the carport in the first place is to cover cars from sun, heat and hail and shade when we'er just out goofing around in the yard.

Hey Big, have you checked with your county/city to see if their building codes allow a car port and what requirements they have for said car port. I know in IL depending on what county/city you live in they require a building permit and adherence to their codes.

The building you pictured in back with the sistered beam is not a clear span front like you say you want (i.e. it has 2 posts breaking up the opening.
Spanning 36' with no posts is going to need either a very tall engineered or glue lam beam but lMO a steel I beam will be your best bet for that long of a span.

All that being said, with solid wood beam headers, the builders rule of thumb (NOT necessarily engineered code) is 1" of height per 1' of span.
I am using 4 x 10 x 12 Doug Fir beans to span the 10' finished openings in my new shop.
On the other side of the shop, for the 16' wide roll up, I am using a 4 x 16 1/2" x 18' built up glue lam.

High wind gusts and snow load would be my concern. Seen many a carport sailing thru the air here when wind gets underneath.
