Grenaded my carrier bearing on the drive shaft at 90k miles. It really made a racket under there. Is this a common problem? Of course the local dealer didn't have one and had to fly one in from Juneau, Alaska overnight. Hope it comes tomorrow. Just when the long weekend comes up this happens.

Jack,

Did you have any warning at all? I can hear noise the the driveline when I accelerating hard. I wonder if my carrier bearing will be going out at or around 90K miles. I've got 73K miles so far... .

Charles

Jack,

Can you expand on the "other stuff" in your signature? What bombs do you have? Just curious, because I have the same noise that Charles does under hard acceleration that might be coming from my carrier bearing... (I have yet to pinpoint it!)

See my sig. :D

In my other 3/4 ton trucks with carrier bearings (Chebbys) I have successfully lubed them with an attachment which fits on the front of the grease gun hose which looks just like a hypodermic needle. Worked great. In fact I have lubed a lot of sealed bearings that way. Get a little grease in them and they start workin' real good again!:D

Mine grenaded at about 7k miles. No warning. At the time, the truck only had an EZ. I asked this question at the time it happened and the general response on the TDR was that it wasn't common, or noone had heard of it happening.

The funniest part (looking back) about the whole ordeal was that it took the stealer two and a half weeks to fix my truck and get it back to me. Their excuse? "A driveshaft for this truck is a pretty rare part and we've only been able to locate two in the nation. " I could locate about 15 without looking too far: On their lot connected to trucks for sale.

Carrier bearing

Well they got the carrier bearing replaced and still have some noise. Found it in the tailshaft output bearing and of course they don't have one of those either. Damn... ... ... . what service.

The carrier bearing was really shot. It started to make noise on accelleration only. then it was there on decelleration with the engine brake and finally it just was doing it all the time in any gear and speed and getting worse as I got towards Anchorage. Probably another 25 miles and it would have been ugly.

I have 275 injectors and a boost elbow. Nothing too exotic. The other stuff is "decorations".

As the truck is still on the hoist at the dealer I loaded way too much stuff in my Bonneville SSE and headed to the beach house for the long weekend.

Have a good holiday.

on my 3rd

had major probs a while back when i lifted my truck 5", finally had them take it back, no prob since back to stock with 100hp injectors and Comp in EZ mode and frequently tow 31,000# gross. oh yeah ,go to a drive shaft shop for a rebuilt one you'll save over a hundred bucks!!

Mine blew up at about 30k miles. The only engine "mod" I have is no silencer ring. I like the idea of the hypodermic needle attachment - anyone seen any around?

Bearing failures-last time

The dealer finally got it done. $642 seems a little high to replace 2 bearings even though one had to make a $100 airplane trip.

So it is back to town(400 miles round trip) to get my truck. I hope they got it right this time. Oo.
