This is the second time this happened. The first time it was 2 sides and replaced under warrenty (entire driveshaft), This time just the bottom right side is "cut".

Can this be replaced with out replacing the entire drive shaft?

The bearing should be available, I found one for 2002 @ Advance Auto Parts but they don't list the 2004. Close to a hundred bucks just for the assy. (center support bearing) bg

Mine has been torn for at least a year now if not longer.

Does it matter?

I am thinking about having my whole driveline rebuilt, carrier bearing and u-joints. A friend of mine just took his driveline in and had a new carrier bearing put on and the driveline balanced and it got rid of the launch shudder completely. He is very happy.

Well, last spring/summer I had new u-joints put in on the drive shaft. I had them done cuz I didn't have time (like up hill the truck wouldn't roll back kinda bad!) and I knew they would need some magic (grinding) to get in.

The rubber was good. but I'm sure the snow killed it this year. The rear axle jumps all over the place on snow if it's kinda getting traction.

The shop didn't have fittings big enough to fit the drive shaft to balance it!!! I may have to find a place that can soon and have that barring looked at. maybe I can deal with it my self when it warms up.

when was the last time you greased the slip splines? i know if you dont keep that greased it will freeze up on you and take out the carrier bearing

Got mine at NAPA. Heavier duty design than stock. I 'tapped' it on and off myself. It was a PIA. Make sure you mark everyting before disassembly so you can realign everything when you put it back together. Be careful not to damage the spline.

Unless you have a lot of miles on the bearing, just replace the rubber part. It is cheap and easy to install. You can buy them separate.

No, unless you get a bad one, they will last for years. I have 298,000 on my 91' with one new rubber replacement.

You have to take it to a shop to have it pressed on though, right?

I did. I've read of others doing it with a hammer.

The rubber on mine seems to be bonded quite securely. Looks like it would take a torch to remove (mmmm that would smell good). Tell me more about replacing just the rubber. Maybe I'm just not looking at it the right way.

Do a search on "center support bearing" on any of the bigger part stores, they will show a picture. Depending on the store, they will list from $5. 00-$15. 00 for just the cushion, not sure why they are priced so different. The complete unit will sell for $20. 00-$40. 00. You can also just buy the bearing.

Jason... I had the same problem with mine, went thru 2 of them before 30K, after the second one went they replaced everything from the back of the 5600 to the aam pumpkin, been fine since. But now you have me paranoid...

well, I ordered the barring from quad4x4. apparently they get them direct from AAM $130 shipped to be here by Tuesday hopefully.

This one lasted about 70,000 miles.
