Im thinking of going back to a large Lance camper and 4x4 DRW.

Im helping my parents drive their 35' class A MH with the WH Chasis. Power is ok, but almost need earplugs on the hills with the eng reving and fan coming on. Miss that diesel torque.

With all of the good deals on the 12s should I bite the bullet and go for the 13?

What would be the mileage advantage and I believe the 13 has a 14k gvw compared to 12k on the 12.

Camper would be around 5k lbs wet and my 03 carried it no problem, so payload shouldn't be an issue.

95% of the driving will be carrying the camper or towing and not used as a daily driver.

I would like to get around 12 mpg with the camper on. (better than 6. 5 in the MH)

Also, what is the gvw of the 2013 3500 SRW?

Let me know your thoughts and opinions.

Thanks

If we used our big heavy Lance more, I'd go for a '13 dually in a minute. It would be so nice to finally have a truck with the GVWR higher than the combined weight truck and camper being over the GVWR by 500 to 1,000 lbs. For years I have wanted a dually pickup with the GVWR of the early Ford F450 trucks. Ram has finally arrived!! A '12 dually won't have the higher GVWR nor will it have SCR which gives better fuel mileage.

I've been hauling Lance campers off and on since 1986 wouldn't consider a SWR truck for a slide-in truck camper of much size... been there, done that and never ever again. I learned my lesson with a 9' Lance on a SWR truck.

If you didn't get into the throttle too heavy, 12 mpg should be doable. I'm really impressed with the increase in power of stock engines from '01 to '07. This '07 I bought 2 years ago is an absolute beast over my '01. I'd also make sure it had an exhaust brake (don't know how I hauled my Host w/out one) and I like the manual over the automatic, the automatic failed on my '01. What Lance model are you looking at?

I like the 1191 for the side door option. Now they have the 1172 which has the side door and a rear slide with a couch.
If I went srw, i would be looking at something like the 950S.
Also thought about a sb srw with the 855S.
Guess I'll have to go drive a new one. The last CTD I drove was my 03 with the Smarty set on level 3
Thanks

The 855sb is enormous when you see it loaded on a srw 2500 qcsb Duramax like my friend's. The rear axle must be way overloaded along with his 3195# e-rated BFG's and rims. Sucker wanders all over the place and leans badly. He's upgraded the shocks to Bilstein 5100's which are overwhelmed. A drw is the way to go.

1191 is similar to mine. I definitely enjoy the side entry, the awning can the be placed on the side over the door, plus it's MUCH better when you are towing.
