I have noticed that most lift pump failures have been fixed by either raplacing it with an OEM pump, or purchasing the kit from Enterprise Engine Performance, or some others. I have noticed that in DieselRam.com they have used the Carter pump. Well in fact a lot of them have. Is there anyone here that has one installed? If so what was all involved. I want to get rid of my lift pump before it rids me. So I was just wondering, in fact they are using the pump part number CRT-P-4601HP. Which in the Sumit catalog is $85. 95. Ideas?:confused:
 
When we bought my wifes 2000. . it had a Carter push pump on it. It worked well for about 3 weeks after we got it and it finally started having problems. It would work and then stop... this went on for a while and I decided that was it... so I replaced it with the same model.

I thought ok... its all fixed and I dont have to worry about my wife getting stranded. . The new pump worked great for about a week. . and again we started with the problems.

Right now I have bypassed the Carter with some fuel line until I get a chance to remove it. Her truck sits and idles @ 16lbs and even with the EZ and DD II's the pressure dont drop below 10lbs.

The fuel system was upgraded to -6n lines so there is plenty of fuel pressure.

If I were to install another pump... I would look more toward either the FASS system from Piers or even the PE4200 system. .

The Enterprise engine pusher pump kit is a Carter pump and so is the OEM pump. Rick - on your wifes truck is there a relay powering the pusher pump or is it just wired direct to the stock lift pump wire? Reason I ask is that very few people have had problems with a 7 psi carter pump as a pusher back by the tank feeding the stock lift pump. In my case I went through 4 OEM lift pumps between 28,000 and 60,000 miles, added a pusher pump at that point along with replacing the OEM pump and now have 135,000 miles on my truck and it's still running great. I am using a relay to feed power to the pusher.

Just curious, do you have the relay tied to the stock pump cycling, or wired ignition-on hot (w/relay)? I am looking to upgrade my system, but do not have the funds for a FASS.
 
The 4601 HP carter is a decent pump and a bunch of guys on here tried it out, unfortunately it suffers the same failure rate the stock pump has. I have one in the shop and use if for a back up lift pump because its cheaper and will work. It also is not a direct bolt on as it has 3/8's ports and the stock pump has webber 10mm or somthing like that. Also the HP4061 does not have the same connetions for wiring. YOu have to either make your own harness for it, or be creative and get a lift pump pig tail and wire it up that way.



I am thinking of rigging mine up as a second pump (with a second feed from the tank) and run it off a oil press sensor. . that way when my fuel press drops below X psi it will kick on and give me a little boost in press. The only thing holding me back right now is a way to hook the two fuel lines together and not have a back feed. I need a one way check valve and I have not found (or looked real hard yet) for one.

The situation you describe is somewhat similiar to the intermitant failures that I experienced and it turned out to be the OEM pump rather than my pusher.

So if I go with the FASS fuel system I should have a piece of mind? I just want to be able to feel safe on the road with the trips I take. Thanks for the info though, I think it helped.

The reason that I knew that it was the Carter was because. . when I seen no fuel pressure... I would slide under the truck and listen to the pusher pump.

I would tap the pump with a hammer and then it would start working and I would get fuel pressure.

It has been 10 days and I have not lost pressure. But the Carter in disconnected and bypassed. For some reason the Carter would bind up and quit working...

That is the reason that I know it was the Carter. .

I've gone through 3 OEM pumps and now I have the Carter pump at the back as a pusher and nothing up front where the OE was and this one looks like it is on the way out. I'm thinking reinstalling OE pump back in it's original location and replacing the Carter as the pusher. I have a relay powering up the Carter triggered by the OE wiring. What Carter pump are you using for the pusher? I believe they have a 7psi and 14psi. Also did you install a diode across the relay or that's not needed? I'm also thinking changing all my banjo fittings to the larger ones, still using the OE ones, thanks.

The Carters that I have had on the truck were CRT-P4070. I already have aftermarket fuel lines. They are -6n lines with free lowing elbows. All the stock banjos and line are gone.

Right now with this setup and the stock lift pump. . on a WOT the pressure does not go below 10 psi. .

And yes there is a relay powering the pump...

Maybe a gerator pump? No vanes, rebuildable.



I would like to hear the woes of gerator type pumps. I hear a lot about the vane type.



Is there a reason few use a gerator pump?

I want to sit back and see how the FASS system works. . In the mean time I may get a new lift pump and hide it under the seat. .

Im going thru the same lift pump blues and would like to get the FASS PUMP, I've gone thru 6 pumps and 1 VP 44 in 150,000 miles. My latest failure was in Beckley, West Va. the other day, lost power all off a sudden preasures went from 12 to 0 & 3 and back up to 10 & 12 psi. Lucky for me Mountian International in Beckley had the lonely little 3990105 in stock for 178 Bucks, I installed it in there parking lot and all is good again.
