duramax fuel problem

Feels so good when....

i am looking at buying a case 970 diesel tractor does anyone know anything about them? problems? the only thing i seen on the one I'm looking at is the power takeoff doesn't seem to stop,i don't think it is taxiing any info on what to look for would be appreciated.

greg,

great tractor! but be careful of the power shift. the pto spinning is an easy job to fix with a book and minor parts. the power shift may be contaminated if the pto is really out. drive the tractor around and see what is, shifting and such. ask for records and how often the transmission fluid is changed. how much for the tractor. they have 401ci motors.

I've messed with a few of them when they said Case -International on them. Even when new the pto spins when not engaged and the hydraulic fluid is cold but it's not under any power, you can stop it with your hand. It's sort of handy for lining up the splines when connecting a pto shaft. Only real problem I've encountered with this series is if it has the gear shifters on the right side of the seat the linkages have a tendency to get "tangled up" and stuck in-between ranges, this requires removing the seat and top cover to "untangle" the linkages. No big deal, just a hassle. It can be avoided with careful shifting though.

We are running a 1070...

and have been for about 15 years now. Bought it used from a reputable dealer and he worked with us on the minor problems we found when we bought it. Still works great.

It has the 12 speed power shift. It is possible to get the range selector into two ranges at once as mentioned above, but careful shifting avoids the problem. We have put one clutch in the tractor since we have owned it. The clutches on the power shift transmissions are hydraulic and are great; no maintenance... just replace when the tractor no longer movers when the clutch pedal is released. One word of caution. If it is a power shift transmission, do not leave the power shift shifter in REVERSE when doing stationary PTO work (if applicable); the PTO will not get adequate oil circulation for cooling.

The independant PTO clutch is a little light for heavy use. We have put several PTO clutches in during the 15 years we have had it, but we use the PTO all summer every summer. The PTO has a brake on it. If the brake is properly adjusted and the PTO clutch is in good shape, the shaft will not spin unless PTO is engaged. Not a big deal.

We have done one engine rebuild about 5 years after we bought it. Used about 2 quarts a day before the rebuid... after the rebuild to this day it uses less than 1 quart per 100 hours. Dealer told us 2 quarts per day (8 hours) was not unreasonable... horse pucky!

Brakes are not the greatest in the world, but they never have been. Very reliable and hard working tractor. :D

My 2096 is a bit larger but has similar mechanical systems. I took the shifter apart to clean up but even with new spring bushings, it will jam up kind of like an old 3sp floor shifter. Just have to be careful. About the only drawback with the powershift other than the PTO concern mentioned is reverse is a bit too fast. Parts are readily available.

the guy who is selling it has no idea about anything on the tractor he did not even know how to start it. it was his dads tractor he doesn't seem to mechanically smart. he wants $4900 for it , it needs new rear tires and looks like one valve cover is leaking but I'm not concerned about that just was wondering about the pto ,did not want to have alot of money into fixing it. i think i can get him to come down on the price he said in the ad that it was a 870 with 95 hp. when i seen it was 6 cyl i knew that it wasn't an 870. is 95 hp the right hp for a 970? how do i know if it is a power-shift? it has no markings on it not even shifting pattern. there is one lever for high, low range and another for the gears has 3 plates for those.

My power shift has the four speed stick with park forward all the way left using the right stick with the "gated plates". The power shift stick is on the left with reverse all the way to the rear and one, two, three going forward. The manual shift would be set up with the left stick having high range forward, low back and reverse left and back. Hope that helps. I never sat in a 970 so I don't know the similarities.

You can buy service manuals from a company called IT available all over the place. Manual C-203 covers the 970. Here is one source for parts and I think the manual.

http://www.abilenemachine.com

I was lucky to get the original manual in nice condition with my 82' when I bought it.

The 970 is 81. 90 drawbar HP and 93. 80 PTO HP according to the Nebraska Tractor Test. My Dad bought one new in '75. Not sure how many hours he has on it. It's been his loader tractor since about '80 or so. It's been overhauled once on both the engine and powershift transmission. I think the only thing that he has had constant problems with are the brakes. They either don't work, or grab all at once. Seems like he has them apart once every year. I have an 830 thats the same design and has the same problem. He has the 970, a 1070, a 2290, and a 1370.
