A few months ago I removed my case cover to do a KDP on my 91. 5. I simply pinged the bore opening of the dowel pin and loctited it. It was pretty secure to begin with anyhow. Which is fine with me.

Then I retightened the case cover bolts and all other bolts I could get to. I guess that would include the cam and oil pump bolts.

However I didn't attempt to get to the 5th case bolt behind the cam gear. I didn't have a bent wrench and just didn't mess with it. But its bothering me now. That and the fact I didn't remove and loctite those case bolts I did get to.

So off comes the cover again to put my mind to rest. My questions is this. I installed the new case cover seal and dust seal. Since then the truck has sat for a few months and not ran due to some other work I've been doing.

Can I remove and reinstall the case cover and just reuse the new crank seal I installed? I'd rather not replace this brand new $50 seal again when I have not even ran the engine with it. I still have the plastic tool to slip inside the crank seal for reassembly.

Thanks!!

$50 for a crank seal??? Where'd you buy it? I only paid $29 for a genuine Cummins seal a few weeks back for the '03.

Scheid Diesel, Terre Haute IN. Not all prices on Cummins Parts are the same I suppose :(. But it was easy since its directly on my way to work and they have the parts I always need on hand.

I've seen most OEM parts on most all types of vehicles from all types of dealerships vary greatly. Win some, lose some I suppose.

Sure you can reuse the seal.

Did you save the plastic sleeve to aid slipping it over the crank? Without it you risk messing the seal up. I might have an extra if needed.
