CAT Engine Workshop is Offensive

Attention: TDR Forum Junkies
To the point: Click this link and check out the Front Page News story(ies) where we are tracking the introduction of the 2025 Ram HD trucks.

Thanks, TDR Staff

Throw Away Diesels.... THANK YOU CUMMINS!

Bluebird is now utalizing CAT C-7 engines and I have to learn something about them. They have dropped the Cummins 5. 9 for now.

The factory rep had nothing good to say about Cummins 5. 9 going so far as to say it's nothing more than a pick-up truck engine that is cheaply made/mass produced. He contimued to say that CAT would not mass produce such an engine as their production standards are higher and thus they do not intend to lower their standards.

He apparently needs to educate himself.

FWIW CAT engine are now going to be utalizing common rail fuel injection and adopting cold air recirculation as opposed to EGR.

YUP - ignorance is rampant - even at the highest levels!

You might ask the guy if he's aware of the MANY Marine, commercial, industrial and emergency equipment installations there are using this "cheap pickup engine"...

Did he also mention that Ford owns Cummins? :D

You will find, that if all a man has talk about is how bad his competitors product is - - Watch out cause he has nothing to sell. Guess he doesn't want to talk about Cat parts prices.

Guess he doesn't want to talk about Cat parts prices.

I've owned alot of both brands and I have still yet to see this huge parts price difference everyone talks about! I guess you guys need to get a better Cat dealer.

Maybe it's me but I tend to be a bit skepital about opinions about the quality of another brand i. e Cat on a brand bias website such as this. Not that there is anything wrong with that at least it's stated at the top of the page and doesn't have a hidden agenda. I like the Cummins in my Dodge (I didn't buy it for the truck, trust me :D ) however the 5. 9 is where I now stop with Cummins.

One example of brand bias that made me laugh was a while back people were talking about how twin turbos on a dodge cummins was the greatest thing ever, but as soon as someone pointed out that Cat was doing this on their larger engines, it became junk. same when it was pointed out that Ford's new engine will also have them, it was the same reaction. I guess if cummins didn't do it it's crap. Now while Cummins does build a good engine... . they're not the Dali Lama, calm down. :-laf

On the topic of the Cat rep, they're just like every other group of people. A few winners and a whole lot of losers. :D

Take it with a grain of salt and move on... .

He is obviously a "corporate brain washed uneducated moron".

Really...

Only an idiot would say something like this.

He probably applied for a job at Cummins, got denied and settled for the pencil pushing job over at CAT (for minumum wage).

That would have been a good time to bring up the 3208! :-laf

IE ford twin turbos, there is a difference between two turbos and twin compounded turbos.

I think you may have missed the point. It isn't what was done it's more of who did it and who's talking about it.

For example: Chevy has the Allison. On the chevy site it's the greatest thing on the planet. However on the ford site some say it's junk, but if ford had it the Allison it would be the other way around. Same goes for the ford site. There are some people on there that deny the early 6. 0 was a lemon all while saying the new D-Max is crap. :-laf

My point is before you believe anything you hear or read, check the source and the place you read or heard it.

C. D Day makes a perfect point about Cat parts prices and I'll add to it. The dealers will void warranties on the slightest technicality. Our shop services hundreds of school buses a year and I have to say that while cat engines run nice when they're up, they cost a fortune when they do finally break down. Overall the cummins has proven itself to be reliable in a class only taken by engines like the DT466 and DT360. in fact the only thing that I wish cummins had done is make their engine a sleeved engine like the DTs are... Its nice being able to do an in-chassis rebuild and basically come away with a brand new engine for $1800 in a complete rebuild kit of parts.
