i am going to attempt to gut the ole cat on my '94. is it that big a deal, or simply a matter using a steel bar to poke out the innards once it is off the truck? thanks in advance. #ad

Just did mine . the hardest part was getting it off. There is a pin on the cat that gets lined up with the muffler and it was a pain coming off. Once off, just bang a prybar in it and it comes out. you might want to wet it a little inside to keep the dust down. Hope this helps

Geez, is it hard to get off!! I banged and cussed on mine for two hours, and I'm STILL not done! I'll change a dozen fuel return hoses before I tackle one of these again! #ad

I'll finish up tomorrow, after the bleeding stops!!

Jim,if you have access to a oxy/acetylene torch just heat the ends almost red and wiggle the cat,it will almost fall off,5 minute job and every thing will be reusuable.

I knew I needed one of those torch sets!!
I used an air powered die grinder on mine. I put a reinforced cutoff wheel on it.
Viola, done.
Just try not to cut too deep.

Just in case the EPA is watching us: I did NOT gut my cat. I therefore did not see an improvement in spool-up, and the truck's acceleration was not "brighter". Also, the idle did not seem smoother. #ad

Gosh I don't know why I waited so long to NOT gut my cat!

Just a quick question???
Do any of you guys who have gutted your cat, have to go through state emissions tests?
If so, is there any problem? The State of Ct. now requires emission tests for diesel pickups.

As far as I know most states just do an opacity test(density of smoke)on diesels. The compounds that the cat is supposed to remove are clear. I've heard some inspectors look to see if the cat is installed, but find it hard to believe since the 24 valves don't have a cat and I doubt if the inspectors are that up on the model changes. I very well could be wrong so someone please correct.

These trucks have been through so many cat, no cat, over the years... ... the MORONS who work at the DMVs don't know if it requires one or not. They still ask, "Is the diesel a custom engine or did it come with it?". How many of us are running around out there?

Governor Bush released us from our annual emissions inspections here in Florida. However, it is still a federal crime to remove or mutilate the cat. However again, I'm not sure what the time limit is to have a cat replaced if it goes bad and must be replaced with a "cat delete" pipe from your local friendly Dodge dealership while the new cat is being sought after. Chances are, you might get caught just about the time your used one is found and is awaiting installation before your equipment violation court date. A new cat is prohibitively priced at $600-$1,000 with it's precious metals core as it's catalyst. The fine for tampering with it is as much as $250,000. I'm sure the judge would not impose a fine on a lowly individual of that magnitude but that's pure speculation. Mine rattles now and is starting to be of concern. I may have to purchase a cat delete pipe from Dodge for $43. 00 and begin a search for an affordable used cat from a reputable used parts outlet next to the washing machine. #ad

well i spent the better part of the weekend trying to wring this cats neck, but to avail... . i have no meat left on the knuckles now #ad
, so i guess its off to my local home depot to purchase a torch and give it another try this weekend. If all else fails it will be left up to my local muffler shop for help... . i did want to get the cat off without having to skin him though #ad

Dustoff, if you have an air compressor, go to the local Wally world and get a die grinder. I think I payed $15. 00 for mine.
Ron, I just went through insp. the other day. No problem. My wife said(she hears like a canary) there was a little disgussion between the workers, then something like "*f* it, send it to the next test" was said. I have a 98, so maybe they thought it was a 24 valve?? I dunno. They didnt give me an "opacity" test either.
I think dieselb59 is right. They dont know or care, which is fine with me.
