Cat serial number

I just bought a 77' IHC Transtar II that's had a 3406 swapped in to replace the original Cummins. I was looking for the engine ID tag but I can't find it. Anybody know where the tag might be hiding under some paint or if there is another way to ID the motor. The motor is supposed to be a 400hp but it feels stronger than 400hp.

It should be on one of the valve covers on the top. That is where I have seen them. Mack puts their on the valve cover also.

If not on the valve cover, they have a tag on the right rear side of the engine block between the exhaust manifold and pan. Depend on age and usage the tag might and might not be there. They also sometimes stamp the serial number under that tag.

I just went and looked at the 3406 on the gen set in our shop and the tag was on the left side of the block just below the deck under the #5 intake port. Sounds like they could be anywhere.

Definitly not on the valve covers, I will scrape away on the sides of the block and see what I find.
