I will be installing a MBRP cat back dual exhaust on my '05. Has anyone remove their cat? If so, do you think there will be any warranty or state inspection issues? Also, what does it sound like. I have heard guys that like it w/o and hate it w/o it. Does anyone know of anywhere I can get a dummy cat?

If I was you, just drill out the stock cat, and put her back in... . The best of both worlds. Passes visual and runs cooler... .

I had mine cut out and they put flanges on the straight pipe and the cat so I can bolt it in and out when I have to go and get it inspecetd works good the motor breaths a lot better

I removed the the cat and used a piece of 1"x1"x3/16" angle iron 2' long and a 8lb hammer to clean it out. You stand it on one end and drive the angle iron all the way through. It will break it out on the other end. Just repeat this as needed and switch ends each time. Once you break through the first time it gets easier. I chose this over the test pipe thing for inspections. Where I live, they make a visual inspection. They see the cat pipe is there and say no more. I ran straight pipe for awhile, under heavy throttle with a load, the cab would resonate something fierce!! I installed a Flowmaster muffler and toned it down with out any power loss. With out the cat the turbo is definitely more responsive!!

I just did mine yesterday. It is sort of a pain to get out of there. What I ended up doing was take a sawzall and cut the pipe as close to the crossmember as I could to make room to get the rotozip in there to cut the pipe off of the turbo down pipe. It makes me think Dodge did it like that deliberately to make the cat more difficult to remove. Aside from that issue it was easy. If you cut it like I did, make sure to leave plenty of pipe on both ends of the cat just in case you ever need to re-attach it so you don't need to buy a new one. Also, hold onto your old one because they are spendy to get a new one.

A Word of caution.

I live in Georgia. When I have my old Honda inspected they check the CAT with a Thermal infrared gun. They measure the difference between the input temperature and the output temperature. Not every inspection station checks this, but I never know when I go in for the inspection if they will check this or not. I don’t know how much the Cat for a diesel cost but the cheapest cat for my Honda is around 150. 00

Hey, if you live in lovely cali---fornia,,, no Diesel smog! Hard to beleive, we are so fortunate on the left coast..... My cat is going to be gutted... Then reinstalled for visual effect...

Sort of true. In So Cal they have visual inspections required. In Nor Cal, you can do whatever you want for now. Mine never had a Cat, so it makes no difference to me. As far as warranty, exhaust should have no effect at all on that. Heck, the local dealers install exhaust on a lot of the trucks on the lot so they can charge 3K for it!

Sooner or later Kal-e-fornia will find a way to pocket another buck by

finding a way to check (and charge) for Diesel smog inspections.

New technology is always being developed to make that easier!

IMO - Think you would be better off with the test pipe . . . . lots easier to play

dumb or have some good yarn - and be able to put the "real" (unmolested)

cat back - if and when you need to. [Expensive to buy another!]

Lastly - Hey aftermarket folks!! - how about a "test pipe" that looks like a cat?

Think I would be ready to pay a premium for that!!

SSalzer,

I would not reccomend gutting a cat, go check the price of a new one at the dealership, big bucks!!!!!! If you get a test pipe and a pair of band clamps it's a 15 minute change out anytime you plan to go racing or offroading to swap the test pipe in place of the stock cat. The first time is a bit of a bear to get it all loosened up, but after that and using band clamps it's no big deal. Plus the flow is considerably hampered by just knocking the catalyst material of of the can, the exhaust is in there bouncing around looking for a way out to some extent. They are available in 409 stainless like the stock system and aluminized too.

I plan to do some "offroading" :-laf

Mark could you PM a price for me please. :D

I took mine off... being an 04. 5, this was the first for the cat and the inspection station didn't question it.

It is loud. I got a Summit Racing full stainless system for an 03 (it bumps the 03 from 3. 5 inch pipe to 4 inch) and simply didn't replace my 4inch down pipe... enough in the kit to remove the cat and everything else.

But, I was disappointed when it didn't sound like my 99CTD, I assume it must be because of the timing of the fuel injection done by the common rail??? Or maybe the difference is from the 3 inch to 4 inch pipe??
