Just kicking this around, i'm not some big enviro terrorist, but I'm going to a 4 inch exhaust in the spring and was wondering if my CAT "has" to be put back on? Is there negative and/or positive effects if it is not?

We dont have emmision or veh inspections in Michigan so that would not be a concern.

Any warranty issues if I were to pull into the Stealership with out a CAT?

To be quite honest I'm not sure if my truck even has one, but I'm sure it does as it is a 235HP truck ( cali emmissions?) but I've never really looked for one while under there.

Thanks

J-

You have a resonator and a muffler for sound. No emission control on exhaust. Unless that resonator does more than I think. I dropped them both in the dumpster the first month I had the truck. It is loud now, I drive it easy around the police.

Your truck does not have a cat. It only has a resonator and a muffler. But if you take off the resonator and the muffler it will not affect your truck as far as performance, however it will be loud. Oo.

Noise

I know what you mean on being easy around the police you have to. I just got that little $95 "no muffler" "unnecassry noise" ticket last night will pay tommorrow a. m. but it still sucks. I was not even on it hard but the lady cop is known for pulling Dodge Cummins trucks in our area and she got me. Just a note to be careful in town.

Sorry, dshawhan. I live in South Eastern Indiana, and it seems to be the cats patutie to rip the resinator and muffler off, at least within 150 miles of purchase. Mine went straight to the shop and was taken off after purchase. Whats wrong with women these days, I mean cant they understand the need for men to size up their units and see who can make theirs louder?

I am curious what the entry and exit sizes for the resonator are... is it like the older 12v... I guess 4" in and 3" out?

I have heard that sometimes the kitty falls off your truck and the resonator happens to just fit the hole that remains... ;)

My first diesel was a 91 F350 crew cab with )*^)*^ with 2 wheel drive. Stupid thing had a spark arrester at the end of the tail pipe... a hammer and a flat edge screw driver and it was out in a couple of minutes.

As I understand it, and this may be wrong, the real concern from our engines is soot and C02 and not all those nasty gas fumes.

I'd have to agree with the earlier post that the thing in front of the muffler is a resonator and NOT a catalytic converter. For one thing, it's too far back from the motor. Catalytic converters are always further upstream (closer to the motor) to run hot enough to burn off unburnt gases. Unless the exhaust from the CTD is so hot it requires being installed further away?

Also, I'm looking at the 4 inch exhaust upgrade from Banks and it doesn't look like this resonator is part of the upgrade. If it was a catalytic converter they'd have to make allowances for it and get it certified for California vehicles.
