Catalytic Converter ?

I've heard the catalytic converter refered to as a resonator, are they the same thing, if not what is the function of a resonator? Will removing it to install a 4" exauhst keep me from passing an emissions test? Cooler EGTs won't do me any good if I can't get my plates renewed. Thanks in advance for any help on this. Steve

I'm assuming that you have a 24v. If so then you do not have a catalytic converter you have the resonator. A resonator is just a muffler that is designed to take out sound at a particular RPM. Taking it off won't affect your emissions - it will just be louder.

It is an Oxidation Catalyst and is NOT considered a catalytic convertor.

Interesting - looks like they changed something in 2001. I know on my 1998. 5 it is definately a resonator.
