I have an 04.5 and the cat was removed (cut out) , and I am considering putting it back in. Does it have a flow direction or does it matter? Also what are your thoughts on this muffler Donaldson M085171?

Why would you want to put it back on?

IIRC, the pipe is bent differently on each to the point that it could really only be put on one way.

You'll see where the crossmember is relieved for the cat. It'll only fit one way.

I have the Donaldson M085171, it's a good sounding and high flowing muffler. It is big, and I am not sure how much room there would be for it and the cat. I put mine where the Cat was.

If you have an exhaust brake the M085171 doesn't do anything for the high pitch whistle it creates, so I had to add a resonator.

Thanks for the advice, I am considering re-installing because its a little to loud, may consider the donaldson muffler instead of replacing the cat. I would like the best fuel mileage and reduce egt's at the same time.

You won't see much, if any, change to EGT's. The OEM exhaust is more than enough flow... unless you have a few power upgrades.

I ran that way for a while and it did sound great.

On my dads 06 we ditched the cat and kept the muffler and that sounded really good, and now with the 70/60 wheel in his HE351 is sounds awesome!!

Probably not enough power to see an EGT difference.

Hello everyone, I am looking at buying a 2007 2500 QC with the 5.9. Truck is straight piped and I will need to put a cat back in as i live in a e-check part of Ohio. Did the 2007 with 5.9 have any 02 sensors related to the cat from the factory? I know it needs a cat, but after searching I still cannot determine if there were any 02 sensors.

No exhaust sensors on a 5.9. CAT is all you need.

If it's an OBD check you might not need a cat as the ecm has no clue if it's installed or not.

I passed this morning in a similar configuration and had 0.9% Opacity (40% allowed).

It is an OBD check. It is loud as all heck at the moment. I am considering the cat and Aero Turbine 4040XL (w/resonator) to tame it down. It also has a 50HP Efi Live tune on it. Any chance that would cause it to fail an OBD check?

FTE resonator instead of aero.
