catalytic converter

Hey, I'm new to the diesel motor and also 1st time dodge owner. So far, only 2500 miles, I love it. . I have heard that you dont have to smog diesels in california, is this true? If so, then it shouldn't be a problem taking out the catalytic converter. . Does anyone know what the performance enhancements are without it?

Not sure if it's different in CA, but the 2004's came without a Cat. The 2004. 5's are the ones that have cats.
