Yet another bypass filter question

HELP! Installing freeze plug in rearmost part of motor?

Has anyone read the latest issue of Diesel Power. There is an ad in it that is proposing that Caterpillar should build a transmission for the 5. 9l cummins. They say that they use them in RVs so why not refine them a little for the light duty truck. I would really like to see something like that happen to the dodge truck since that is their main weakness in my opinion. I just hope my 48re will last long enough for those to come out on the market.

I doubt you will see a CAT automatic transmission in a Dodge Ram truck, so you might as well just upgrade the 48RE.

I have had no troubles out of my 48RE in the year I have owned my truck.

I am very happy with this transmission.

I really like my 48re, albeit in hine-sight I would have gone with the NV5600. It's just allmost every vehicle I've owned prior had been a manual and I was sick & tired of shifting one.

I just read an article on the Cat transmissions for light on up to heavy trucks/chassis. Cat is quoted as saying they are only going to offer them behind their motors for the time being. They aren't putting the idea of selling them to put behind other manufacturers engines off, just for the time being. They're pretty good trannies, though I don't expect to see any of them in light vehicles any time soon.

once one get bolted to the back of a c6. 6 or c7 engine, that would maybe be about the right size for something in a pickup truck

They do have one they just came out with to go behind the C7's and C9's. I believe the model number is CX28... the little brother to the CX31 and CX35 (?CX38?). I believe it is new for 06 or 07.

Where do you see this? Is it in the Feb. issue? I haven't sat down to read it yet, but I couldn't find what you are talking about by just flipping through.

It wasn't from a TDR mag article... I think it was Fleetowner or another truck driving oriented trade mag. I'll look and see if I can't find out for you.

Oh, I went back and re read the first post and the article was from Diesel POWER. I just got my copy of Diesel PROGRESS and it was on my mind. Sorry.

You could always repower your Dodge with a Cat motor. My son works on OTR trucks at the local Cat dealer and he says to stay away from the C7s with the HEUI system though. Seems alot of diesel pushers come through the shop with problems.

I was looking at diesel pushers 2 weeks ago and none of the Cat powered ones had a Cat transmission. All Allisons.

Update on the Caterpillar Transmissions

All,

We are not in full production with these transmissions to date. Initial release will be for Vocational On-Highway toward the end of this year or early 2007. First model release will be the CX31, which mates with C11 and C13 ACERT Engine. This application is mainly for dump trucks, refuse haulers, etc... CX35 for C15 and C18 will follow, and then CX28 for the C7 and C9, maybe C6. 6. This information may change slightly, but Caterpillar fully intends to provide a superior product for our On-Highway customers that will utilize our internal software to maximize the efficiency of the combination.

I would love to see this drivetrain integrated into a light duty platform like a 1 ton pickup, but the markets are occupied by GM/Allison/Duramax, Ford/Powerstroke, and Dodge/Cummins. So, we wait.

Wonder what the price of a rebuild on one of these units would be. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
