Connecticut diesel tax

Read about this in Diesel Progress last night. I will post information about the tractor when I get it. If I remember correctly 33 hp and 96ft lbs of torque! It's made by Ferris Industries and utilizes indepentdent suspension.

Are you suggesting that is a CAT diesel engine? I have a interest in commercial lawn mowers and a friend that sells them. Usually Ferris and other Manuf. use Kobota Diesel, Yanmar, and Briggs Stratton (which is a Dihatsu (sp?) Diesel. All 3 cyl. However there are some 2 cyl model diesels (don't remember manf. other than Europe, Japan and China sourced) mostly used in generator sets.

Yes, it's a 3 cyl n/a cat engine. I am having difficulty getting the specs from Ferris (email limits at work).

Here is the information from the flyer:

Looks like Diesel Progresses specs were a touch off, especially on the torque.

The new Ferris IS 5000Z mid-mount zero-turn mower boasts

of the most powerful, reliable, economical performance in its

class. Featuring a newly-designed four-wheel IS independent

suspension system and 31. 5-hp Cat long-lasting diesel engine,

the IS 5000Z is the ultimate mowing machine.

The IS 5000Z offers four-wheel independent suspen-sion

with adjustable front shocks. This next generation of

independent suspension from Ferris means the benefits of

IS—operator comfort, speed, extended mower life, traction

and consistency of cut—are more apparent than ever before.

A 31. 5-hp,three-cylinder,industrial-grade diesel

engine from Caterpillar,Inc. ,powers the IS

5000Z. It features a 6000 hour engine life rat-

ing,1500 CC displacement and engine torque

of 55 ft/lbs at 2800 rpm.

... with the power and performance

of a Caterpillar diesel engine.

A bet.....

I bet it is a tiny Perkins in yeller :D Most of Cat's small engines are Perkins based, but have Cat fuel systems and electronics.

What would be wronf with a tiny perkins, they are good motors. I always had great luck with Yanmar diesels, they are my favorite small diesel for tractors/mowers. They are very expensive engines, but well worth it.

yes it is a PERKIPILLAR:D

Some of the smallar CAT rollersare using a HATZ air cooled diesel.

Belive me Cat will not use anything unless it is built to THEIR specs.

Or sometimes made to believe without their expensive fueling system...

Anyhow, Diesel Progress says it's a Caterpillar 3013 1. 5L distributed by Southworth Milton Inc. so who knows. I agree that Perkins and Yanmar are great engines.

As far as i know Dixie chopper hasthe worlds fastest, and most powerful lawn mower. The 72" cut XXWD4000. It has the Yanmar 44hp turbo diesel,it is about 16 grand too,it will run circles around that 72" scag,as far as cut, speed, and power/comfort.

I have had the pleasure recently to test a Gravely zero turn commercial mower (up to 72in cut depending on model) with a turbo charged diesel -31hp I believe. This was one of the B&S -Dihatsu (sp?) engines. I was amazed that such a small engine was turboed! Hugh amounts of power for this application.

You forgot something

Those little turbo diesel mowers are super quit. I demoed a Scag Sabber Tooth last week and you could run it a full throtle and still be able to talk over the mower. I think the mowing speed was 12mph. DixiChoppers are fast but don't cut as good as a Scag or GrassHoppper.

I asked the sales man if it would void the warranty if I strait piped the Scages;) "He said what I don't know wont hurt me. ":p

At $10,000 I think I might have to pass on a new one just yet. ;)

Darryl,I beg to differ,my Dixie cuts way better than the scags my competitors use right next to my accounts,The only mower that cuts better IMO than the dixiie the hustler super Z,the exmark lazer z is also a great cutting unit.

You might be right

Snow man,

You might be right, the only time I've used a Dixi Chopper is on my yard which is very ruff and hilly and the Dixi Chopper just made the yard look really choppy. I've heard they do much better on smoother flater ground.

I'm running an older Scags right now (SSZ model) it has a 61" deck with an air cooled 22Hp. Been a good mower for the $3,000 I paid for it. ;) I'm going to upgrade to a front mount mower in a few years just because they get better traction on hill sides than the midmounts.

Diesel chainsaw

Diesel Dog House - I relate I have the truck (we all have ) got a 45hp diesel tractor and I am trying to find a affordable diesel riding mower. I love the smell and sound. Also if Diesel is used in riding mowers - particularly in commercial use - there is a significant savings in fuel. From my observations there is a much greater fuel savings in mowers (gas vs diesel) than pickups. Of course lawn tractors are always under a load and our trucks are not. I have heard " with load" that a CDT gets double the fuel economy of a typical big block gas. I think the fuel savings are greater than that with lawn equipment.
